How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
For over ten years, I lived in an empty house devoid of any furniture. Since I got married, I lived in this house with discomfort, especially whenever I have visitors. I used to borrow furniture from neighbors. This has improved. I am so proud of my home now that I bought enough furniture for the house. I also started a shop business in my compound. It earns me a daily income from the sale of household items.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDireclty did well especially on how to access mobile money on my phone. This made it easier for me to withdraw and to spend the money I received easily. Initially, I did not know how to use MPesa they made sure I was enlightened.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent the money I received on paying school fees for my children. I then bought a heifer that I am now raising. I hope that it will calve and the milk will be used for food and for sale. I also will use the offsprings to offset huge school fees debts in the future. used part of it to buy school uniforms for my children in primary schools. Even though I currently have a heavy school fee burden with two children in secondary schools, the transfer really helped me last year. I then expanded the shop business that I build in my compound her in the village.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
For so long, I have been having unfunctional living room since it had no seats nor a table and whenever I had visitors, I was forced to seat with them outside or borrow some from my neighbors. I am glad that all this are in the past now as I now have mine unlike before. Owning some seats and two tables is the biggest difference the transfers has brought into my life and I am really thankful to GD for enabling me fulfill my dreams.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 7 am in the morning as I was preparing my breakfast for my family when I received a message indicating that I had received some money from GiveDirectly. At that moment, I became so happy since I knew that all of my troubles would come to an end. I then sang some songs and prayed to thank God for His blessings on my family.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfers in buying some seats and a table. For so long, I have been having a living room with no seats nor a table and to some point, I did not see its purposes as it was not in use. I also used part of the remaining amount in buying school uniforms for my children so as to improve their self esteem as the ones they had were torn and they were always uncomfortable wearing them. I spent the remaining amount in paying school fees for my child in high school since I had some arrears which I did not want to accumulate as it would be difficult for me to clear them.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have never had a good rest at night because I sleep on the floor without a matress ( just on old rags) which is very uncomfortable as I always wake up feeling very tired. Receiving Give Directly money means I will be able have a good night sleep which will enable me to face the next day's task with a well rested body and mind as I am going to use the first transfer to buy a bed and a mattress.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I spend most of my day working on my maize farm. This job is very cumbersome and exhausting especially with the scorching sun. So I am usually happy in the evening when I am done with my farm activities as I am able to take rest.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraints is my biggest harship, this is because being a peasant farmer who solely rely on a small maize farm as source of income. This makes it hard for me to provide basic needs for my children. Sometimes we are even forced to take only one meal the whole day due to lack of money to buy food.
