How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am glad that I made to accomplish all the plans that I had after receiving all the transfers that I was promised during enrollment. I still feel that I have a new goal to add another dairy cow to my other herd of three. I had been running a retail shop alongside agribusiness that I am hoping to generate the proceeds that will, in turn, help in buying an additional cow.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
That great transformation in the village at the moment can be traced back to the past two months when GiveDirectly came into the village. The grass-thatched houses that stood in the village some months ago are now a story of the past after everyone was given the freedom to choose how to spend the received transfer and many went for the corrugated iron sheet roofs and demolished all the old huts. In my opinion, this was a job well done by GiveDirectly and we could not ask for more since such an amount was huge enough to change every household's livelihood. I am thankful for all that I can see around and hope the same will still happen in other villages.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my second transfer, I was eager to add another dairy cow to my shed since I had been fully dependent on only one that would sometimes fail to produce enough milk in some seasons. I spent KES 30000 in securing one that is now producing enough milk for my family of seven. I also spent KES 6000 on two sacks of maize currently serving us as foodstuff, bought clothing for my five children at KES 5000, obtained a barbed wire and nails at KES 5250 that I used in fencing all around the grazing fields to facilitate easy restraining of my livestock, and saved the remaining amount to help me in the daily purchases of other household goods. I am happy that I am currently having an easy time locking the cows behind a lockable door to allow me to work on other projects.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Receiving the transfer came with great excitement to me. I was not expecting to receive it that day as I had woken up as early, as usual, to attend to my banana farm that was getting bushy due to the fast-growing weeds. It was around 10 am. when I heard the passing by neighbors conversing on the same and had to check mine. I was lucky to have been part of the group and that alone got me out of the farm. I had to inform my wife who was also out to feed our cows since we needed to withdraw the same day and start the construction process.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am glad that I finally made the biggest difference not only in my life but also in my son's life after the complete construction of their new house. The evening rush to ensure that they secure a place to sleep in the neighbor's place is no more as they now have a good house where they can conduct their evening studies before they get to bed. I am grateful that this happened to us as it has been my wish for a long time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My sons had been moving out to the neighbor's house to spend the night there as I had no extra space left in my single house. On receiving the first transfer, the construction of a new house for them was a priority as they not only needed a place to sleep but also ample space to read every evening. I spent KES 21500 on obtaining 22 iron sheets and paying the contractor who managed to complete the construction within a short period. I also obtained a lactating cow at KES 25000 to add to the already existing one as I had been wishing to increase milk production that I am currently selling to the villagers and restaurants in the immediate shopping center to earn more income. I also added a sack of maize used as foodstuff at KES2900 and used the remaining amount on obtaining clothing for my household members.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will build a nice house for my boys. They are growing up so fast so that we can longer share the same room. They usually go to a neighbours house and this is not conducive for their studies. I will also buy a dairy cow to add to what I have. Any income that I will get from selling milk will assist me in meeting their education needs. The house that I will build will also give then a good space where they can they will have an amble time to do evening studies and do well in school.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part is in the evening. This is because during the whole day, I worry about meeting my needs and those of my household. By evening, I will have found money from my motorcycle taxi to buy food.Seeing my family off to bed knowing that they have had their dinner makes me happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship that I have faced in my life is financial strain resulting from having to buy foodstuffs for the household. I have only one cow that is currently out of production. I spend whatever little money I get from my motorcycle taxi business on getting just little, only for tea in the morning. This is straining my daily budget since the other foodstuffs like maize and cooking oil also have to be bought.
