How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is now different because I now own goats in my homestead. I didn't have any livestock in my compound and I never had the plans of owning them anytime soon. These assets which I know own will help me in meeting my future financial goals with ease without much straining. Had it not been GiveDirectly, then I would not be owning them for now.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has done really well in almost everything. It has improved our living standards by giving us the transfer to plan on our own. This has made our lives completely because most of us now have permanent shelters, livestock and meeting the basic needs of our families. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying some beddings such as a bed and a new mattress at KES 11000. Previously I was using the old traditional bed which I was not comfortable with always complaining of some backpains. I then cleared a kiosk bill of KES 6000. I also gave my son KES 20000 to clear a dowry for his wife since they have always been harassing us for not have paid it. We are now at peace because all is settled. The remaining amount of money, I am using it in buying enough foodstuffs.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Having my own goats in my homestead has brought up the biggest difference in my daily life. First I settled in buying them because they reproduce twice a year and their offspring mature faster compared to any other domestic animals. I am assured of becoming wealthier in a sort period of time. My plan was to have a dairy cow but because they are very expensive and I had some other needs to meet, I had to buy the goats and I will exchange them for the dairy cow once hey reproduce and mature. This will make me solve any problem that I will come across. I will also no longer strain in buying some foodstuffs for my children because this has been the major problem.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7 am when I heard my phone ringing so loud which was so unusual. I was even shocked. Then I decided to call my helper to help me in reading the message that had been sent. Upon checking he realized it was an mpesa message from GD. Finally, I had received my first transfer. I was so happy and started celebrating with my family.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some livestock such as ten goats at KES 30000. I settled in buying the goats because of the climatic condition of my village, the goats can survive the long droughts and in addition to that, they also reproduce twice a year. I later bought a few building materials such as iron sheets, building poles, timber, and nails. This was for the purpose of the construction of a new house for my brother-in-law who is mentally ill. Previously he used to sleep on the verandas of my house since my house was also small it could not accommodate us all. I am spending the remaining amount of money on buying some foodstuffs and some household items that I had desired to have.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Selling sisal fibres has been my job for a very long time. However, I stopped 7 years ago due to insufficient capital. Since then I rely on my husband who burns charcoal for a living. This overdependence has stirred up my desire to revive my business. I will therefore use part of this transfer for that purpose. Besides, I will purchase cows for rearing. These will provide milk for sale as well as family use.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest of my day is in the morning. I am always energized during this time making me ready to face my daily duties.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraint is my biggest challenge. This has resulted to constant suffering in my family. My spouse spouse supports us with only 2000 shillings a month. It is even more difficult to take care of my mentally ill brother in law with this amount. This is because he deserves special care yet we do not have enough to offer him. Currently I have been sick for the past three days, but I have never seen a doctor since I do not have money for medical fee.
