How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new goals so far because the one that I had been longing to fulfill was the issue of bedding. For over ten years, I have been sleeping on the floor which was so frustrating and painful. I could always complain of back pains every morning. I am so glad that this was achieved and I have now been sleeping soundly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a good job by ensuring that the money was sent directly to our Mpesa accounts. The cash has been of help to the entire village because some of us now have a businesses, beautiful houses, and livestock. On the other hand, I feel the organization needs to clearly state the reason why some were left out. A few individuals in my village have been saying that there was no fairness since they were not enrolled.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge portion (KES 30000) of my second transfer on buying some spare parts for my motorcycle. It has broken down a few months ago and this has been frustrating me so much. Bearing in mind that this is the only source of income that I was relying on to meet the household expenses. At some point I couldn't even afford to buy foodstuffs for my kids, this was truly the worst experience ever. I am glad that I was able to repair it and it has been operating so well. I have now been able to fend for the family from the profits I earn. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for bringing a positive impact into my life. Also with the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my family and other household items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8 in the morning when I was heading to my daily hustle when I saw the message notification. Without hesitating I decided to check its content, it was from Segovia Technology. They had debited the first transfer that I had been promised earlier during the enrolment period. At that moment my heart was filled with joy because I knew very well that I would finally achieve what I have yearned to purchase. I even decided to go back home and shared the news with my family members.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that through the transfers I was able to repair my motorbike which had broken down as a result of the worn-out spare parts. I have been operating as a bodaboda rider for years and this used to be my main source of income that I relied on. However, after the motorbike had stepped operating I had to engage myself with the causal jobs with very low income (KES 100) and the family of three that I was taking care of I couldn't meet all their needs. My brother had to miss classes because I was responsible for paying his school fees since we are orphans, This has been stressing me a lot. I am now happy because after repairing this bike, life has been good. On a good day, I normally earn KES 1000 which is enough to fend for my family and even save for some other future investments. My brother is now at school studying with fewer disturbances which is encouraging. I am so happy and hopeful that I will no longer struggle especially in meeting my family's daily needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge part of my first transfer on buying some spare parts for my motorbike which costed a total of KES 29000. For the last four months, it wasn't operating because some of the parts had worn out and I was forced to stay home jobless and sometimes engage myself in casual jobs with a meagre income. I also bought a new mattress at KES 55000 to replace the old one which no longer gave me the support I needed, because I could always feel some pains every morning. To add to that, I bought a wooden door to fix the initial one which was temporary. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a motorcycle taxi rider. My motorcycle cycle developed a mechanical problem two months ago and I have not managed to raise money to facilitate it's repair. This has made me struggle a lot financially since this is my main source of income. I am glad that Give Directly has finally come to my rescue. I will use 150 USD to repair the motorcycle and ensure life gets back to normal. My second plan when I receive this money is educating my younger brother who is at home due to lack of school fees. My plan is taking him back to school to pursue a plumbing course which is his passion. I will set aside 300 USD for this. I believe that when he completes this course he will be able to fend for himself and relieve me of some duties.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My job as a motorcycle rider depends on the availability of passengers for the day. The longer the day the more the hope of getting more customers and getting more income. This is why morning is the happiest part of my day. I always feel that I have more time to do more ,which really motivates me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I live with my brother and my nephew. Our parents passed on when I was 12 years old. We lived under the care of our relatives who were also struggling financially. My childhood has been tough. When I became of age(20 years) and completed my primary school studies, I had to shoulder the responsibility of taking care of my younger brother. My sister then passed on and left his son who is now my responsibility with the help of other relatives. With the financial struggles, I have gone through a lot of stress in my life. I am a motorcycle taxi rider and what I get is not enough to support all our needs. Growing up as an orphan and shouldering the responsibilities as the elder one is what has been my biggest hardship.
