How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new goals and I am grateful for the kiosk business that I am operating courtesy of GiveDirectly. Previously I did not have any stable job to lean and it used to be so tough. I couldn't fend for my family's basic needs. I am glad that all have running smoothly from the profits that I earn from the business.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
According to me, GiveDirectly has not done anything bad that they should change. First, the enrolment process was free and fair. There was no discrimination since the officers made sure they visited all the needy households.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a power saw machine at KES 50000. We had agreed with my spouse that this will be a priority as soon as we receive the second transfer. I am happy that this was achievable and for now, he no longer hires those of his friends like before. I am also grateful that the machine has started to operate and earn good profits. I was even able to purchase ten goats from the returns. Apart from that, I paid school fees of KES 2000 and bought foodstuffs for the family. I am extremely thankful and happier in life because my life has completely changed.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still remember just like the other day when I had just arrived from the dam at around 9 AM when a message notification popped on. I was a bit anxious and because I am illiterate I sked a hand in help from my daughter. After checking, she realized that it was an Mpesa message from the Segovia Technology. I felt so happy and we even decided to hold a special prayer fr this bundle of joy unto our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that through the transfers, I was able to buy the dairy cow. Owning this cow means a lot in my life because I am optimistic that I will achieve a lot through it. Most of the people who own cows are well-off households and I can't imagine I am now one of them, it still feels like a dream. I have been yearning to own it for years but it was too expensive. Being jobless, my spouse has been the family breadwinner of the eight family members which was quite a challenge. Most of the time he was not able to meet all our daily needs from his cauls jobs. Considering the fact that I am in a polygamous marriage whatever he earned used to be divided for the two households. Therefore I thought of buying the dairy cow as an asset that we will readily be depending on. I am planning to start selling part of the milk to the nearby dairy shops and generate an income that I believe will uplift our living standards. Also, some of the remaining liters will be for my family consumption and this will make them healthier. I am so grateful to this organization for coming to my village because I wouldn't have achieved all these.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials like bricks, building poles, eight bags of cement, labor costs at a total of KES 35000. This was for the construction of a new house specifically for my business activities. I have been operating a retail shop selling all sorts of household items, foodstuffs, vegetables however the premise was a temporary one and whenever it could not rain the stock could get damaged and I have been experiencing a loss all along. I later cleared school fees of KES 15000 for my daughter who recently transitioned to secondary school. With the remaining KES 10000, I bought a dairy cow which has been my long-time desire to at least have one in my homestead, I am happy this was achievable.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means revival of my retail shop in the village by renovating it and restocking. For the fifth year now, I have been running a retail shop in the village. However, the harsh economic conditions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic made my businesses run out of stock. I am now planning to use 400 dollars from the GiveDirectly transfer to renovate and expand my retail shop. I will also furnish the retail shop to a more desirable state so as to attract more customers. I will use the balance to restock my retail shop so that customers do not miss on the commonly purchased commodities such as maize flour, wheat flour, cooking oil, rice among other commodities. This will finally raise my profits and consequently boost my standard of living.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. The best gift ever is being alive. Waking up in the morning healthy makes me happy and I will rejoice for the rest of the day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of money to meet my family's basic necessities of life such as proper healthcare, food among other needs. It all started when the retail shop business I own in the village started performing poorly. This has made gee my life miserable.
