How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After a huge investment of my second transfer on the piece of land that I bought, I now have a new goal to develop it by constructing a shop that will give me a business platform. I am hoping to open up a retail shop in the future, and will not be possible if I will not start investing in construction at the moment.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The diversified opportunities that the villagers invested the transfer on were so amazing as everyone did what they felt was helpful and transforming for their households. I am happy about the changes and in my opinion, this happened because GiveDirectly gave us the freedom of making our decisions on investment. There is nothing to complain about in our village, but we are grateful that this happened to us as it had been to other villages around.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 35000 of my second transfer on buying a plot in the nearby shopping center that I am currently making arrangements to start developing. I had been hoping for such an opportunity with the plan to raise finances that I would have used a bit earlier but was not possible since I have not been having any consistent source of income. I also invested KES 5000 in farming after hiring a tractor at KES 3000 and also purchased maize seeds worth KES 2000. I then spent the remaining amount on buying a sack of maize worth KES 4000 for my family of three and also used the last bit on the household goods that I was still missing in my household. It is a relief to me that I now have a piece of land and can look forward to developing it to enhance a start of a small business in the future.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
We were taking our breakfast with my wife that morning after releasing our children to school when I received a message from GievDirectly. The message came bearing the good news that we had been anticipating since we got enrolled. We had received KES 55000 as we were promised. We were both excited, thanked God for the promise that finally came true. Since we needed to start working on the already laid down plans, my wife advised me to collect the amount first so that we start executing one after the other when we have the money at hand. I a,m glad that I managed to come home with the whole amount and the great work had been going on since then.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
After the huge investment in livestock, I am have witnessed the biggest difference in my daily life as I am no longer buying any additional liters of milk. Our livestock is producing enough milk combined thus saving us some coins that we had been spending. This is currently thus sorting other household bills that we had been foregoing and has brought a lot of happiness to the household as life became easier with less buying compared to the previous months.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the first transfer I received, I spent a huge portion of it on livestock investment. I had been hoping to increase milk production from my livestock since the small amount I had been producing had never been enough for us to use with my family. On receiving the money, I spent KES40000 on obtaining a goat worth KES 5000 and a cow at KES 35000. I a,m glad that the lactating cow I obtained is currently serving us with enough milk compared to the less that I would get before. I also replenished the foodstuff reserve as the maize we had would not have kept us any longer. I, therefore, bought two sacks of maize each at KES 2700. With the remaining amount, I obtained other household goods and also clothing for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I want to build a better and bigger kitchen in my homestead. The one we currently use is small and it rains inside making it difficult to cook there on rainy seasons. Receiving this money will mean a lot to me, because I will be able to build a bigger iron roofed kitchen amounting to $300 that will serve as an extra room for when we have guests. The remaining transfer will be used as follows: $300 for a dairy cow,$200 for food and clothing and $100 as savings.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Each day I wake up at around 5 in the morning, take breakfast then head to my farm until around 2pm when I go to the market to help sell livestock until evening. The happiest part of my day is mostly in the evenings when I get paid and I know my income will help sustain my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest hardship is unemployment, I temporarily work as a broker in a livestock market and this job is not always guaranteed. My family owns a small piece of land where we practice subsistence farming, the produce we get from the farm is not enough to sell and make extra income for the household, hence making it difficult to provide housing and clothing for my family.
