What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Last year during a short period where we experienced very heavy rainfall my house collapsed and I have had to sleep in it since I have nowhere else to stay, and since then I have been in fear that eventually it could collapse with me still inside. So when I received the money I decided to buy bags of cement so that I could finally manage to renovate my house. I bought two bags of cement which cost me KES 1,240 and used KES 100 to transport them back to my house. I remained with KES 1,660 where I used KES 1,300 to purchase a bag of maize flour which contained a dozen packets then used the remaining balance to buy groceries like tomatoes, cabbage and kales.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the whole of both the first and second transfer on the building materials (poles, iron sheets, nails) which we used to construct a latrine. We had one but it fell down leaving us with no option but to use our neighbor's latrine. This did not go well with us especially whenever we wanted to use the latrine at night or when we had visitors. I felt ashamed of myself risking my family's life walking all the way to my neighbor's home at night. I feel proud of myself for having achieved this goal. When I received the third transfer I spent on food stuffs for the family. We had run out of most of the food stuffs due to the poor harvest which resulted from the prolonged drought we experienced last year.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am grateful because this funds have given me an opportunity to finish up what I had started but failed to finish but now I ma so happy that soon enough my home will be done and I cannot wait to start my own family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
A while back unfortunately my mud house collapsed on one side of the house due to strong winds and since the foundation was not strong enough so I had initially started renovating it bit by bit but this time round I was putting bricks but I had to come to a stop every time the money ran out. So after receiving the money I bought two bags of cement where each bag was KES 620 and they both cost me KES 1,240 and as for the labour I managed to pay KES 1,000. Then I used KES 200 and KES 100 to buy two packets of maize flour and a kilogram of beans respectively. The remaining KES 460 I put it in my savings so that it be of some use in the future.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very excited because during enrollment my husband and I thought this was merely a hoax, because there was no way an unrecognised organization would come out of nowhere and just decide to give money to people, and so we were very doubtful but after the transfers came in I was ecstatic and I had more faith that the program was genuine and it was here to help us.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am a tailor by profession and I got to learn the art through my husband but at some point my husband fell sick, so after he was ill I was still an amateur but I needed to help in providing for both of us, and till date my husband's health has improved but not as much so with the money we receive I am able to at least cater for our livelihood from time to time when times get tough.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving the money i decide to buy a sack of maize which I plan on taking to the mill and turn to maize flour and it went for KES 1000 because at that moment the nutrition department was not being covered so well due to our financial situation. As for the rest of the money I decided to save most of it for future use so I was left with KES 2000

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My house is falling apart, it's too weak because the foundation was built using wood sticks and mud. It's been one year since I constructed the house, all was well until heavy rains came and got damaged. I use strong wood sticks to support it. In January started building permanent house but in the process, it got stuck due to a lack of funds. Therefore receiving this money means I will be able to accomplish the construction project that I established.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband has been sick for almost a month. He was admitted and recommended total bed rest after he was discharged. When I see him progressing well each day it makes me happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been married for nine years and still have no sign of conceiving a child. It saddens me when I see young women and people of my age having children, sometimes co-wives mock me when I try to seek help from their kids. After six years of marriage, I decided to try to find help from traditional doctors because they were cheap but my effort didn't bear fruits. Two years later I visited one of the clinics in town after saving little money from casual jobs I booked an appointment with a gynecologist who examined me and immediately I started therapy. Continuing with the therapy became hard as I spent all my savings.
