What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For years, I have been living in a house that is in pathetic condition. Its roof is rusty and leaky. Although I have been desiring to mend it, my major challenge has been an unstable source of income since I am but a housewife. I only strive to make charcoal and sell firewood to augment my husband's income. This is a less profitable business now that many people do the same. Therefore, as soon as I confirmed my transfer, I decided to use it to buy additional materials for renovating my house's roof. I am glad that now it is better and I am not afraid of rain.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give directly has done well in everything. This financially support will uplift me financially. I will not only buy food for my family but also, I will be financially independent.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being a housewife, there is usually nothing I bring to the table when it comes to my family's financial support. My husband who is a farmer, is the sole provider for the family. His earnings are not much and we often end up incurring debts. Currently, we have school fee arrears of ksh5000. When give directly provided us with this opportunity, I now can say that I do contribute to my family's financial support. So, when I received the funds, I used ksh3200 to reduce the school fee arrears and ksh1000 to purchase some food stock for the Christmas holiday.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was seated in front of my house. I was deep in thought about what step to take next concerning the situation with my kids. I knew very well that if I did not work out something soon then my kids will be sent home and this will affect their studies. While still in that situation I heard my phone ringing loudly inside the house. I went picked it up and checked through. I was shocked and excited at the same time when I realized that I had received the transfer. I quickly called my husband and told her the good news and he was happy too. We agreed on how to spend the money and I quickly went and withdrew the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has made a big difference in my life and that of my children. I was able to pay part of the school debt. This enabled my children to stay in school and they continued their studies without any interruption. This gives me peace of mind and I thank full for it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The major challenge I am currently facing is not being able to pay school fees for my children. On several occasions, they have been sent home to come to pick school fees balances. The situation is tough for me because I currently do not have a job. My husband too does not have a well-paying job and what he earns from selling the local brew is only enough to buy food for the family. Now that the drought has persisted for three years now, the coconut tree does not provide enough local brew to sell daily. This has greatly affected the income we get from it translating into our struggles as a family. When I received the transfer I immediately spent KSH 800 to pay school fees for my two children so that I could stay in school and continue with their education. I used the remaining in buying food worth KSH 370 for my family. The food stock I was having in the stock was getting finished.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
As a housewife, my biggest desire has been to help my husband with the household responsibilities. I had a food kiosk that used to give little income to support my husband. Due to insufficient money, I started making losses and had to shut down my business. I still have a dream to start a new business of selling vegetables along the road. Receiving this money means a continuous flow of money that will help me assist my husband, and I need around 4000 KES for the business to kick-off.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I sold 4 sucks of charcoal a few months ago and I was able to make 2400 KES. This money enabled me to feed my family for one month with a lot of ease.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My current challenge is a lack of money to help my husband, with the household responsibilities. I had to shut down my business because I was making losses. Being unable to help my husband with some responsibilities in the house is frustrating and depressing.
