How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am glad that I was able to accomplish most of the plans that I had before receiving the transfers. At the moment, I have an additional goal to start up a business in one of the business premises that I recently constructed with part of the second transfer. I still have young children who have a long way to when it comes to their education. I am, therefore, looking forward to saving some money from it for their future school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The work done by Give Directly has led to the great transformation of many households including mine. Life would not have been any better without the cash transfers. I never believed that I would ever own motorcycle and rental shops but now I have them. The power we were given of deciding on how to spend our money coupled with the information given to us during the enrollment process motivated people to wisely spend their money. On the other hand, there is nothing the organization is not doing good.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a bigger portion of my first transfer on a deposit of a piece of land that I recently acquired. With the second transfer, I used a bigger chunk, 33000 KES to both clear the land arrears and develop it. I constructed four rooms for business one of which I am planning to use to run a grocery shop while the three other rooms I will rent out. 20000 KES I spent on 5 goats for rearing. If all goes well then in two years' time I will have several of them some of which I will sell whenever an emergency arises.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 3 am when I had woke up to prepare my kid for school since our school is located a long distance from our home. I decided to check my mobile phone and to my surprise, I noticed Mpesa message from Segovia technology. I was so happy after realizing that I had received the transfer from GiveDirectly. I continued with the preparation until morning when I called my spouse to inform him about the transfer. He was so excited and promised to come back home for us to plan on how to withdraw and to use the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning a reliable source of income after purchasing a motorbike for my husband is the biggest difference in my daily life. Currently, we are able to get an income of KES 500 per day where we are using KES 300 to feed our family and save the remaining amount for the family. This has increased the family cohesion with my husband.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had desired to own a motorbike for my husband so that he may use it for taxi business. This is because he was using our neighbor's motorbike where he was required to pay back some amount of money each day. I spent KES 30,000 to purchase a second-hand motorbike for him. My husband is currently happy and we can meet our needs without much labor. Furthermore, I bought proper beddings since the one we had was very small to fully accommodate me and our kids. In addition, I bought school uniforms and new clothing for every family member. I also bought sufficient food for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means improving my living standard. I have a family of five members and we are all living in a one bedroom house with no door and we use beds that have no matress. We use sacks as our beddings. I will use KES 50000 to add one more room, buy a door for the house and also change it from muddy to a permanent one. I will use KES 40000 to buy ten goats as investment. The remaining KES 20000 will be used to buy food for the family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband makes bricks for sell. Last month , he sold three lorries of bricks that made him earn KES 60000. As a family, we paid all our debts and we bought enough food for the family. Payment of our debts made me happy because I felt relieved psychologically.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of job is the current challenge I am facing. My work is to make charcoal for sell and it pays as little as KES 400 per 90kg sack. This is too little to buy food for the family and also make any investment. It is now hard to pay even school fees for my children who are in primary school due to lack of money.
