How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the next year, my primary goal remains to focus on the educational needs of my school-going children. Currently, my son is enrolled at Nyang'oma Technical College. As a responsible father, I bear full responsibility for meeting his educational needs. To ensure his uninterrupted academic journey, I am committed to channeling all my subsequent monthly transfers toward covering the required $540 annual school fees. Since the tuition fee is higher, I have opted not to focus on any additional goal except the current one. I am hoping to succeed in this.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my view, GiveDirectly does well in giving unconditional cash transfers. Imposing no condition on its transfers has helped in giving us the freedom to prioritize our immediate needs as a result, we feel the impact of the transfers in our lives every time we receive it. For instance, due to my low wages, my priority had been to meet the educational needs of my children. Therefore, the amounts I receive have helped raise money for paying school fees. It has brought a positive change; raising school fees in time. There is nothing GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a casual worker and a father of two school-going children; Beyonce and Braxton. Beyonce currently studies at Kambajo Primary School, while Braxton studies at Nyang'oma Polytechnic. Because of the irregular source of my income, I always prioritize spending my monthly transfers to pay off part of their tuition fees. My monthly transfers have helped pay for school. By supplementing my transfers with casual wages, my financial struggles are lessened, and that has given me not only peace of mind but always made me hopeful in life. I value their education, and I also hope that they will be able to do well in their academics and attain good grades for furthering their studies. The transfers adequately supplement my wages from casual labor.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My primary goal in the coming year and beyond is to secure my son's education. Currently enrolled in a technical college, I bear full responsibility for meeting his educational needs. To ensure his uninterrupted academic journey, I am committed to channelling all my subsequent monthly transfers towards covering the required school fees, which stand at $540 per year.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
From my perspective, GiveDirectly excels in its approach by directly delivering financial assistance to beneficiaries without intermediaries. This strategy eliminates the risks associated with third-party involvement, such as the potential for corruption or loss of funds. The direct transfer system employed by GiveDirectly ensures that recipients have unimpeded access to their allocated funds, promoting transparency and minimizing the chances of financial mismanagement.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving the recent transfer from GiveDirectly couldn't have come at a more crucial time for me. Battling malaria, I used a significant portion of the funds, precisely $15, to purchase the necessary medication. The medicine played a vital role in my recovery, alleviating the physical strain and discomfort caused by the illness. With the remaining $14, I made strategic choices to ensure the well-being of my family. A portion of it went into acquiring essential food items, including sugar, cooking oil, and other necessities. These provisions sustained not only myself but also my wife and our two children for three days. In a time when the cost of living can be overwhelming, this financial support brought relief and stability to our household, allowing us to navigate through the challenges with a greater sense of security.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My main goal for the coming year is to use my transfers to meet my children's educational needs. I had been struggling to raise school fees, which forced my children to stay at home most of the time. However, with the assurance of the monthly transfers, things have improved. It has always been easier for me to assist my two school-going children. I am excited to see them succeeding in their academic.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my view, GiveDirectly does well in giving financial aid to needy people in society. People's way of life has changed, and many have invested part of the transfers in business and education. There have been positive changes in the village because people have been able to build new houses. Nowadays, you can hardly see a grass-thatched house in the village. There is nothing that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my recent transfers, I was down financially. In addition, we did not have sufficient food owing to the hard economic times we have been facing. I, therefore, spent all of them to buy food for my family of four members. For months, there have been no casual jobs, yet food prices were higher than usual. I am so grateful because, despite the fact that we struggle, GiveDirectly's transfers have been in handy for us.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
A child's education is a long-term investment. She becomes the light of the home if she excels in her studies and becomes a successful person in the future. I was blessed with two children, the older of whom is in secondary school and the younger in primary school. Due to my meager income from casual jobs, I want to prioritize paying school fees for my elder child, who is now in upper classes and will be doing his final excess in two years. I would like to do everything in my power to keep him from being sent home for unpaid fees so that he can focus on his studies. She is a bright student, and I am confident she will excel in her studies and make a successful transition to university. I really want to thank GD because it is through these transfers that I have been able to pay my fees on time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Regardless of our socioeconomic status, everyone was treated fairly thus enhancing peaceful coexistence. I really appreciate the consistency of transfers; it has allowed us to plan well, for example, in terms of fee payments for our children. Teachers have had faith in us since we began receiving these payments because they know we have a monthly income from GD.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My most recent transfers came during a time when everyone was busy with farm work. I was fortunate to have completed cultivating my half-acre plot of land and was pending planting. As a result, I decided to hire a few of my neighbors using KES 2900, to assist me with the planting. In our region, farming is the primary source of food and income. We are able to send our children to school by selling farm produce to earn money. Furthermore, farming allows us to provide for and care for our families. I'm hoping for a bountiful harvest this year. This is because I used the proper seeds, enough fertilizer, and made certain that I planted in the right time.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I plan to save the profits from my business and the income from my motorcycle taxi job to raise $200 for school fees for my son who is set to join a secondary school in February. He sat for his primary school national examinations late last year and passed well and would, therefore, wish to keep his dream of continuing with education alive.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
As for me, I am just grateful to GiveDirectly for the transfers that I receive. They enable me to achieve the goals that I would have otherwise struggled to execute were it not for the organization's financial support. In my opinion, I would recommend that we be given lump sum transfers to cover up for the pending years.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since it was a Christmas period, I topped up the transfer with my income from my motorcycle taxi job and fish-mongering business to raise $80 which I then used to buy clothes for my three kids to make them look smart like other kids. Again as it is always the custom to enjoy a changed diet during the festive season, I bought food for my family for the Christmas celebrations. The food lasted us for a week thereby saving me from the high cost of living for some days.
