How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My plan now is to focus on agriculture, specifically planting maize. After harvesting and selling the maize, I will use the proceeds to purchase poultry. I have a passion for raising chickens and a very good environment to rear them. Through poultry farming, I will be able to sell the chickens and cater to my family's basic needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I like the way GiveDirectly does their work with transparency and without corruption. They are very genuine and follow their culture without favoritism. My advice is that when you visit the next villages, please consider enrolling youth even if they are not married so that they can improve their lives. Otherwise, continue doing the good job.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother of six children. My husband is a police officer working in Machakos County. I am not employed, but my main economic activity is farming. Since 2018, I have not harvested anything from the farm due to drought seasons. Because of this, we have had to depend on my husband's salary to cater to our basic needs, and it is not enough to cover all of them.Upon receiving my last transfer, I used all of it to pay for my son's school fees and school supplies, as he was joining Form One at Emining Boys Secondary School. Comparing my life previously to now, before I received this cash, it was challenging and hard, but I can say I have improved because I accomplished great things. However, the recent floods have worsened everything by destroying our properties.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My aspiration is to initiate a poultry project as a means of enhancing my financial stability, and I am looking forward to utilizing my third transfer to achieve this dream. Poultry farming holds the promise of a ready market, offering a potential alternative source of income, especially during the challenging drought season. This strategic initiative aligns with my goal of diversifying income streams and creating a more resilient financial foundation for myself and my family. The potential for sustained returns from poultry farming adds a layer of economic security, making it a worthwhile venture to explore.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly excelled in providing us with unconditional transfers. The straightforward and unconditional nature of the transfers has been a significant positive, allowing us the flexibility to allocate the funds according to our immediate needs and priorities. This approach has not only instilled trust in the process but has also streamlined the utilization of the transfers, ensuring that the support is both effective and impactful. Thus far, I haven't identified any areas that require correction or improvement
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I work as a teacher, and my husband serves as a police officer. Together, we are blessed with six children. Upon receiving my transfer, my husband and I decided to invest in securing our land by fencing it, preventing intrusion by goats. This initiative would enable me to cultivate the land effectively. To accomplish this goal, we spent $218. Additionally, $20 was spent on purchasing mango seedlings, and $35 went into preparing the land for cultivation. Later, I used $40 to buy clothes and another $40 for a bag of maize. All these endeavors were previously hindered by financial constraints, as our limited income was primarily directed towards school fees and other essential needs. The transformative impact of this support has uplifted our lives significantly, and my husband and I express enduring gratitude for this remarkable change.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
As a teacher, the moment I received the message from GiveDirectly, I was in school, surrounded by the professional environment that restrained me from expressing my joy outwardly. However, internally, I felt a surge of happiness, knowing that this financial assistance would significantly impact my life. The immediate concern that occupied my thoughts was the impending school fees for my child. Coincidentally, on that very day, we received a communication from the school's head teacher indicating that students would be sent home due to fee arrears. The timely arrival of the funds from GiveDirectly presented a solution to this challenge, lifting a considerable weight off my shoulders. It was a reminder of how small acts of generosity can make a substantial difference in the lives of individuals, particularly when faced with critical needs like education.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I've taken significant strides in my life, experiencing a more manageable process of paying school fees without excessive struggles. Additionally, the unpredictability of farming has been alleviated through the support provided by GiveDirectly, ensuring a steady supply of food for my family. With the current rainy season, I've seized the opportunity to establish a kitchen garden. This garden will be dedicated to the cultivation of vegetables and beans, not only to enhance our nutritional intake but also with the hope that it will contribute positively to our financial well-being.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I allocated $100 for school fees of my child in form three. As a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) teacher, my income is relatively small, necessitating additional support from farming. However, the unpredictability of rainfall poses challenges to successful farming ventures. I dedicated $50 to purchasing food to meet the nutritional needs of my six children. Balancing the budget for a family of this size is an ongoing challenge. finally, I used $50 to buy clothes, ensuring that my children were adequately dressed and comfortable. This allocation serves as an essential component in managing the family's basic needs. Navigating the responsibilities of teaching, farming, and parenting requires careful financial planning, and the assistance from GiveDirectly contributes significantly to addressing immediate concerns and maintaining stability within my family.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Getting the transfers means a lot for me and my family. Firstly, we intend to use the first transfers to purchase food at about $100 since this is one of the challenges we are facing. We intend to use $50 to pay school fees and the remaining we will purchase clothes for our children. For the second transfers I intend to purchase a 5000 liter water tank at about $350. For the remaining amount together with the third transfers, I intend to pay school fees for Barack who is to join form one next year (January,2023). Receiving this transfers will be a great relief for me since lack of money for school fees and other needs has become stressful.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiness in the past six months has come from my childrens success in school. My son Barack excelled well in school which brought me much joy and happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My greatest challenge at the moment is the lack of money. Because of poor rains and lack of enough irrigation water, our farm productivity has gone down which has led to a lack of money to pay for my child's school fees and purchase basic needs. This has made life very difficult since we depended mostly on irrigating our farms to makes ends meet.
