How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently , I just have one main goal which is to become a prominent business woman . I want to expand my current shop and add a boutique by next year . I don't want people to just refer to me as a shop owner but a respectable business woman . Shop and boutique businesses are very profitable and I'm sure the profits will go a long way in educating my children .I need approximately $500 , I'm already saving some money that I get from the shop . After I clear paying for my piece of land , I also intend to venture in livestock keeping . I will start with a few goats and poultry then have them reproduce . I know if I do this , it will help me later to educate my children .
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly is doing everything well. In fact you go beyond just giving cash , I have witnessed your transfers reuniting couples that had separated . Through your pieces of advice , people no longer misuse their money on alcohol . There is nothing to improve on, just keep up with the good work .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I received the second transfer just at the right time . I'm a house wife without a stable source of income. It was in the evening and I had gone to the shopping center to buy a few things like soap , I heard my phone ringing and when I checked , I found that it was money from Give Directly . The first thing that came to my mind was the 2 acre piece of land that my husband and I are paying for in instalments , so I used $100 to pay for the instalment. I wish to clear this payment and own my piece of land because my husband's ancestral land has a lot of disputes regarding it's ownership. I now have a balance of $1000 that I hope to clear soon . I had always wanted to start a retail shop business whose profits would help me to sort out financial emergencies during difficult economic times like this . I'm grateful that I started my shop business using $200 from this transfer . I sell things like maize flour , soap cooking oil and body oils . I spent $600 on two goats that I hope to rear , have them reproduce and later on I'll sell them and buy cattle . Since we had always desired to wear new clothes , I bought my children , husband and myself new clothes that did cost $60 . I wish you could see the look on our faces the day we wore them ! Previously I didn't have a kitchen , I used to cook from outside , so I built myself a simple kitchen using $30 since I already had iron sheets. I also ensured that I cleared my child's day care fees which was $60 and spent $20 on food .

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at the nearby shop at exactly 7 PM when I saw a message notification from my mobile phone. I couldn't concentrate and decided to check who it could be. I was overwhelmed with joy to learn that I had finally received the transfers that I had eagerly been waiting for. I was certain that I would acquire goats.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have goats that I have been yearning to own got quite some time. I settled for the goats because they reproduce twice a year which is evident that I will have many of them within a short duration. I am hopeful and happier because I know my dream of owning a dairy cow is now achievable. I trust my life will improve I will be getting plenty of milk. Since my spouse and I depend on temporary jobs, we will now be having an additional income because I plan to sell the milk in the nearby dairy shops. Apart from that, my three children will be healthier because the remaining litres will supplement our daily meals. I am so thankful because I am certain that the milk business will enable me to achieve all my goals and be able to easily pay for my kids. Initially, they used to lack their basic needs which would stress me a lot.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first cash transfer on purchasing six goats at a total cost of KES 15000. I have been yearning to own them for a long but I couldn't afford them because they were relatively costly. I settled for them because I am certain that I will have many of them within a short period hence achieving my goals. To add to that, I bought a piece of land at KES 30000. I am so glad that for now, I will no longer have to lease from friends during the planting seasons like before. My initial farm was small and unproductive and I have always been harvesting poor yields. To add to that I bought new clothes and shoes for my kids which replaced the old ones that had worn out. With the remaining cash, I bought food for my four family members.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I will use my transfers for extending my house. I live in a small one-bedroom structure. With my two children that space is not enough. I am planning to add an extra room for my children. I will also use the remaining amount to start a business selling groundnuts. I am also planning to start rearing goats. I will start with four goats retailing at 3000 KES per goat.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We welcome a baby four months ago. There were a lot of complications but I am glad now that my child is doing fine. She has fully regained her health and I am grateful for that.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability is our major challenge. My husband who is the sole breadwinner is employed as a truck driver supplying goods to shops. His salary is way too low and can not sustain the needs of our growing family. This is because he has never received any salary increment and the price of basic commodities have skyrocketed.
