How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different because I am now at a different stage of life as compared to where I was in the past before I got the first cash transfers. Initially, I used to sell sweets that could earn me a maximum of Kes 200 per day. Currently, I can say I am sure of getting up to 1000 profit at the end of each day, which according to me is such a big improvement.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I do not have an additional goal right now but my main focus is to make sure that I run and manage the business efficiently so that it can generate enough profits going into the future. I will then use the profit proceeds to take care of my bills which includes paying rent, buying food for the family and paying school fees for the kids.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The last transfers were of so much help to me because I made sure that I settled most of my bills at the right time. I paid three months rental charges in advance in addition to buying food for the family and taking my kids out to go and have fun, which of course we rarely do because of lack of finances. I also spent a good portion of the money to buy the initial stock of my merchandise which I have so far been selling to my clients. I also paid school fees in full amount for my kids who are both in primary school

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different in that my children can now stay in school without being sent home for school fees and I can also provide for them most of the basic needs like meals without much struggle. My business is doing quite well. I save 200 KES everyday out of my business.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My goal is to see my business grow to success to a point where I can provide for my children everything they need, and also give them a good life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my most recent transfers to expand my business. I sell men's trousers in Mathare since December last year, 2018. I hawk these trousers around Mathare. I used to sell sweets around Mathare in Blue House area near Eastleigh estate. I have always admired to sell clothes but I had no capital to start this business. I am very grateful to Give Directly for providing me with capital to start this business. My business is doing well and I get some savings out of this business as well as providing for my children.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
Because I am not able to rent a shop for my business, I am currently hawking which is quite hectic and tiring. With my next transfer, I will rent a shop and bring in more stock of different variety to maximize my profits.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Ever since I started this new business, I have been making almost double the profits I made before. This has really changed my daily life as everything in my life has improved. I now eat better as I no longer miss meals due to lack of money which was a major challenge in my family before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I sold candy along the roadside as a source of income before I received money from GD. This earned me very little money and that is why I decided to upgrade to something more profitable by starting a cloth business. I majored in male trousers because most people in my area sell female clothes meaning there's is less competition. After purchasing the stock, I used the remaining amount to pay my rent and purchased foodstuff.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
I had planned for the money and was really waiting for the day it will be sent, my only fear was that maybe GD was not genuine and we would never receive the money at all. Seeing the message wiped away all my fears and I was happy to be part of such great project.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I have always wanted to start a clothes business but I lacked capital. I always wanted to sell new denim clothes for men, but I could not raise the capital. Now that I will be getting the transfers I will have enough capital to start this business.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is meeting daily needs because I am a single parent to two children aged 9 years and 4 years, who fully depend on me. If I cannot meet their needs or provide for them then it will become a big problem in my life.
What are your greatest ambitions?
My main ambition is to run a chain of new clothes shop for both children and adults.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
I operate a small kiosk by the road side where I sell sweets and cigarettes. When I am not in my shop, I enjoy watching movies, playing with my children and spending time with them when they are not in school. I usually close my shop at 1800hours in the evening which also gives me enough time to spend time with my children after school. I assist them with homework and ensure they have bathed before I prepare for them dinner and send them to bed.
