How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference is that I am now hopeful of living in my own home. Through the transfers I got from Give Directly I have already bought the necessary building materials. Initially, I only used to depend on casual jobs. The money I got from these jobs was enough to buy basic needs. I used to save nothing towards this goal therefore there were slim chances of establishing my home. I am happy that soon I will be living with my family in our own homestead.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the fact that the grant issued by Give Directly is unconditional makes it so unique. One can use the money how best they feel without restrictions and again as I have said it is a grant hence you owe no one. Saying GD has done well will be an understatement. If I were a donor then I would replicate what GD has done to our community with confidence.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
When I received my recent transfers, I bought a cow at Kes 17,000 because I had always dreamt of having one but I never knew it was coming this soon. Besides that, I also used part of the balance Kes 20,000 to purchase poles, sisal twine and nails to be used to construct a house for my household given that I am the second wife and my husband is way old that he can no longer work to support us. The amount that remained was Kes 13,000 and it was not enough to purchase timber and iron sheet for roofing so I decided to save it and wait for the second transfer so that I can add to it and purchase roofing materials.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
A dairy cow that I bought using the transfer is the most valuable asset I can proudly mention. It has various benefits that I will soon enjoy, such as producing milk that my children will be drinking and selling the remaining liters to the local markets for income purposes. I have always been finding difficulties to buy milk as much as I wanted it for my family because of it's high price, not forgetting that only a few people were owning dairy cows in my village because of poverty. I will finally use my profits to start my own business so as to reach our remaining family goals.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6 am when I was doing my normal house chores then I heard my phone ringing continuously. I was a bit nervous. I decided to check what the notification was all about. I was very happy to realize that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. We immediately started celebrating with my entire family.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on expanding my kiosk business. The business was almost collapsing since the little capital that I had could end up in handling the family's needs. I that God for the financial support that I received from GiveDirectly since it has enabled me to revive it and so far, It is doing well. In addition to this, I bought a dairy cow as my potential asset. I settled in rearing cows since I have always had an interest in this field but could only admire my neighbors who were already into rearing cows and the various benefits that they benefited from. I finally used the remaining amount on purchasing sufficient foodstuffs for my family and household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I run a shop business with very few commodities. I have always desired to expand it but due to lack of capital it has not been possible. This business is the main source of income in my family. My husband is a casual labourer and we cannot fully depend on his wages since it is inconsistent. Therefore, I have a plan of adding stock to my shop. This will make it more sustainable to cater for our needs. Besides, I will purchase a cow for dairy purposes. This will mean constant milk supply hence more income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I do not take for granted waking up to see another day. This calls for God's power as I believe he is the giver of life. Such a thought makes me happy every morning.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I developed dental problems last year. This condition has negatively impacted my life since I cannot undertake any heavy duties. I cannot even engage in menial jobs to earn extra income for my family. Besides, my granddaughter is suffering from epilepsy. For the past one month she was admitted 3 times. This forced me to spend all my little savings to seek medical care. These medical conditions are the biggest hardships in my family.
