How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
We currently stay in a very small piece of land where we are limited in terms of what we can do as far as agriculture is concerned. Having invested our money in things that will give us profits in the days to come, we feel we also need to buy a piece of land in the near future. How we plan to excecute this is through actively taking part in merry go round contributions that will help us in saving the money and later on buy livestock and when we are ready we can sell them and buy a piece of land next to the place we are currently staying in.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did very well by giving money without giving conditions on how to spend. In the past we have had NGOs that comes and makes decision on their own on what they think is good for the community but with GiveDirectly I feel each and every person was given an opportunity to decide on how to spend the money.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We used KES 35000to buy a timber smoothening machine for my husband who works as a carpenter. He had wanted to buy this machine and expand his business for a long time but the myriad of needs from family would not allow him implement this. When we received money from GiveDirectly, we made a decision to buy one and we are happy and excited that his business is now picking up very well. We look forward to making more money from this carpentry business and changing our living standards as a whole. I had had to remain at home leaving my husband to gather for all the needs of my family in order to take care of our two young children and this reduced the income that we received as a family by a great extent but I am now happy that this transfer came to help us realize some of the things we would not have achieved anytime soon. The remaining amount of KES 20000 was used to buy furniture and other needs for the family. I feel so happy that we have achieved all these courtesy of GiveDirectly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received my transfers around 2pm that beautiful thursday afternoon while relaxing undershade after lunch. That's when I heard a message alert on my phone and on checking the contents it was GiveDirectly transfers and was overwhelmed with joy.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is happiness because the house I had desired for the past four years is finally complete. The house I had before was tiny because it acted as a kitchen, bedroom and store. Now, I am very happy because my new house is more spacious. Through the transfers, I have bought adequate food in my family hence healthy and happier than before .I am also stress free and my husband is also relieved of household expenditure.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 34,000 on building a two roomed semi permanent house. This is because we had only one house which served both as a kitchen and bedroom and had become worn out. I spent KES 4000 on latest clothing fashion because initially we used to put on second hand clothes. I also spent KES 3300 on a sack of maize meal because our maize stock was depleted and we used to buy 2 kilograms a day because we don't have a farm. The rest I have saved towards buying a heifer which will act as a source of milk and fees in the near future.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to pay school fees for my children in secondary school,I have my two sons in a local day school.last year the older son was in secondary school only but now his younger brother joined form one and the burden of paying fees doubled. The fees was sh10000 but now it is sh 20000 per year with my small scale farming it cannot support me paying all this school fees but with the help of the many from Givedirectly my children will get education
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the evening when I have come home from the farm because at this time my wife and children are with me at home. We get to rest, have a cup of tea as we chat about the days evens.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My wife and my self we are not employed and also old age is catching up with us,we still have children to educate and because we want then to have a better education we struggle to get them all that is necessary for them to be in school. I no longer go to look for casual work because no one will hire because I am less productive compared to younger people .so we struggle here at our Small farm, we have planted bananas, maize and rear chicken to have a source of income thue it is not enough
