How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfer in that I would have had a challenge in clearing the school fees on time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well by giving us unconditional cash transfer to meet basic needs. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well since all the promises were fulfilled.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spend my second transfer on paying part of my school fees and for my children. I was still studying at the polytechnic. I am so happy because I was able to sit for the final exam and the rest of the money I used it to buy food and clothes.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my life is that now I have a television. For so long, my children have been asking me to buy a television in our home. My children use to go to my neighbors home to watch cartoon programmes, and other children programmes. Now am happy to see my children happy watching at the comfort of our living room.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
When I received a confirmation message from Safaricom that I had received KES 55000 at 3.09 am I felt so happy and didn't go back to bed. I anxiously waited for dawn to arrive so that I can get to withdraw the money. I was among the first people to withdrew the money.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
When I received the money from Give Directly, we had a food shortage and spent KES 10000 to buy food for my family. I had obtained a solar light system on credit and I spent KES 9000 to clear the balance. I also bought a television at KES 9000 and later bought a high breed heifer at KES 15000 for rearing. I am left with KES 8000 which am planning to spend on school fees for my children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
This money is of immeasurable importance to me and my family. Receiving this money means that we shall have (buy) our own cow. Accordingly, we shall have a reliable source of milk for household consumption, while selling the surplus to attain additional income. Hence, we will save a lot of money that we could otherwise use to buy milk.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is at the evening when returning from my casual work with some money that could be used to buy food and other household needs.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Since we rely primarily on casual work to gain income for our family's use, we have been struggling a lot to get food and other basic needs. This is because of the unreliability of the casual work - it is usually hard to secure a well paying job in the nearby area. Hence, we tackle tedious tasks to get some money for purchasing food and other household needs.
