Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 2pm while taking lunch when I heard my phone ring.On checking my phone, I found out that GiveDirectly transfers had sent me the transfers as promised. I was overwhelmed with joy and I ate my lunch that day joyfully.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is purchase of modern household furniture which I had desired for the past seven years but couldn't afford. My visitors can now sit comfortably and feel at home in my house and I am very grateful. Initially, I had tried to save towards buying furniture but my efforts were fruitfulness because all the money would be spent on food. This is because our area is semi arid region often marked by long droughts hence increased hunger due to food scarcity. I have also bought a heifer which will reduce milk buying costs which are quite unreliable. I am also happy because my kids have grown healthier and happier unlike before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 11,500 on modern household furniture because I had the old arm chairs which weren't comfortable especially for visitors. I spent KES 10,000 on a heifer because soon it will be a source of milk and income for my family. Initially, I used to buy a litre of milk at KES 50 per day and it was quite unreliable. I also KES 1700 on water storage container to help in water preservation because water sources are very far in our place. I also spent KES 10,000 on latest clothing fashion and school uniforms because my kid's clothes were tattered especially during the long school holiday as a result of Corona outbreak. I also spent KES 7500 on two and half bags of maize meal because my maize crop didn't do well last harvest season as a result of heavy rains in the last year. I also spent KES 5500 on a goat house in order to keep them safe from rains and cold.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have lived here for the last 20 years. This place is ideal for livestock rearing. I used to have 5 cows but since my elder son joined high school I have had to sell all the 5 to support his education in terms of school fees. As at now we do not have any livestock left and the rest of the children might drop out of school because I shall not be able to support them. With the transfers we would like to venture into poultry farming business because this will ensure continuous income for my family. Currently we do not have any income and life is so hard. Our children are somehow malnourished because we can't provide a variety of food to them.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am a small farmer who spends most of the day in the farm toiling so the happiest part of my day comes at the middle of the day when I get to see all my crops which is the fruit of my hardworking.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I faced the biggest hardship when I had to sell all my five cows to pay fees for my son. It was the hardest decision since this is all what my family depended on for everything.
