How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I can say my life is different, in that I have been able to pay my children's school fees. I have five children in number and four of them are currently in school. Before they were constantly chased away from school but now, that is not the case. Just recently they were chased from school but I used part of the money sent by GiveDirectly to pay the arrears and now they are back in school. Building a better house made of stone will be another difference, it will be more stable even when it pours, the rain can not carry part of the house away,
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has done well. It has made it possible for people to start businesses for themselves depending on their capacity and their willingness.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I wanted to use my second transfer to open a small business, but I was not able to. My husband suggested we instead buy stones to rebuild our house. He has been able to buy them and this will be of great help to us since our current house is not in good shape. The house is unstable and about to fall and when it pours it only gets worse.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference that my first transfer has brought in my daily life is that at least now I own a pair of oxen, which is a valuable asset in my household which I never dreamt of owning one day. There is no more hiring from other people, instead, I will be hiring to them at a cost and this also means income for my family and a comfortable life as I will be able to afford almost all the basic needs I could not offer them before.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had never received such an amount of money, and when I got the message from GiveDirectly, I felt happy and I just smiled at my phone that moment since I had realized that the promise had finally been fulfilled.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying two bulls for ploughing. Previously I had to hire from someone which cost me more and with my casual jobs, not all the time I could raise that money. Now that I have my own, I will not be hiring, instead I will hire out to people, this also means more income for me. I also bought two goats. These are like my assets now, because when they reproduce, I will sell some and help me in paying school fees for my children who are in secondary school since paying their school fees has not been so easy with my little income. On my first transfer too, I am saving some of this money so that when my children will be going back for the new year when their fee will be needed, It will help me settle some of their arrears they owe their various schools.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to build a better house for me and my family. It will also enable me to educate my four children in school and take care of our basic needs especially food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. I love waking up to see my children healthy and happy. Having breakfast and chatting with them before they leave for school also makes me very happy and gives me strength for a new day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of a stable income. My husband's job as a casual labourer cannot sustain all our basic needs. It is very painful as a mother to sometimes watch my children sleep hungry.
