How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is now different than how it would have been becasue I have oxen and dairy cows. I have been longing to have them but this was not achievable becasue of my financial status. In my region food security had been declining because the resources to facilitate farming are inadequate. Therefore having the pair means a lot to me because I will be able to plow in time and cultivate maize for my children. My expectations are I will get plenty of bags of maize since I will be in a position to utilize the whole of my farm. Also apart from that, I will be hiring the pair to my neighbor and get an income whereby I will be able to pay school fees for my children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well because it has made me be a better person through financial help. The organization made sure each household was enrolled without discriminating against anyone and to add to that, it delivered what it had promised. I don't see any part that the organization went astray.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying livestock such as a dairy cow which cost KES 15000. This has been my desire to keep it in my compound but becasue of my financial status, I could not afford it. Also, I purchase an ox plough at KES 8500 for the oxen that I had initially bought with the first transfers. In addition to that, I cleared school fees for my children's KES 4000. I am glad they are no longer been interrupted with their studies anymore. With the remaining amount, I bought enough foodstuffs for my children and it's a relief now because we at least two meals which were not possible during those days.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still recall vividly, it was exactly 10 AM when I saw the notification from my mobile phone. When checked it's content it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly informing me that they had sent my first transfer. I felt so happy and blessed because I was positive that I would achieve a lot from the cash transfers.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am owning two bulls that I recently bought with the transfers. I have been yearning to keep them for years but due to the poverty life that had invaded my household, I could not afford it. The pair of oxen will be of great help especially in my agricultural activities. Previously, I used to do the exercise which was so tiresome, sometimes I could hire someone to plough my farm which was costly. Currently, it is a huge relief since I will no longer hire or till the farm instead, I will be using my own cows. I will also be able to prepare my farm in good time, and this assures me of plenty and good harvests. In addition to that, I will hire anyone in need at a fee and get an income. This money will enable me to pay school fees for my children without straining like before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials such as iron sheets, timber and nails. This was purposely for the renovation of my house since it had a leaky roof. During the rainy seasons, we used to seek shelter from neighbours which were so frustrating. I later bought a pair of oxen and an ox plough worthy of KES 39000. With the reming amount of money, I paid school fees for my children and bought decent clothes and a mattress since they have been using an old mat as beddings.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Having a family under decent roofed house is any parent's desires. I had built an iron roofed house while I was still young in my marriage. This has been our shelter since then but over time it roof has rusted making it a porus roofs. To me receiving this money means a decent and conducive house for my family. I will not again be rained on again like my current condition.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Soon after taking my lunch, I always spend my afternoon under a shed relaxing as we bond with my family. This is the happiest part of my day since I flashback on my morning farming activities and how best I can improve them as I enjoy the company of my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The limited resources in my family has been my biggest hardship I have ever faced in my life. I am married to a polygumous husband who depends on casual jobs to support our families and being a subsistence farmer, raising an income big enough to meet my family needs has been unrealistic dream to us. We have been forced to forgo our daily needs sometimes since we cannot afford them. This has been a depression and stress in my life.
