How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the past before the transfers, I could rarely get money. This is because my whole life depended on a small income from casual work and odd jobs in my area which was not only inconsistent but also very small. I could not get enough for my needs and I would take time before I get money. Since I started the business with part of my transfers, I have been getting money on a monthly basis which is a very big difference in my life. I don't lack as before neither do I beg for help. All because of GD transfers which I received.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to start a hotel business. I feel the income from the Mpesa business will not be able to sustain all my needs effectively hence I want to boost it with the hotel business. I know from the two business, my life will be much better than what I have gone through all these years.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on starting a Mpesa Business. I did not have a stable income before the transfers and I have been struggling financially. Since I could not get enough money to start a business on my own, I was not able to star one. This is why I used my transfer to start the business which will sustain my financial needs long after the transfers are over.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different in that I have a constant source of income. In the past I used to to do casual jobs and at times I could even stay at home for a week when I did not get a job to do. I used my transfers to start a new business where I do spray painting and I now I have a regular source of income to meet my needs and pay school fees for my siblings. I am now happy since I no longer depend on casual jobs to meet my basic needs.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to open an Mpesa shop. I will save the money I get from my business and use to start the new business. This will therefore be an additional source of income to pay school fees for my siblings. I will also use the income to buy food and pay rent.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my most recent transfer to buy a spray painting machine. I was employed in a garage and the money I was paid was not enough to meet my basic needs and that of my siblings. Casual jobs from the garage was also irregular and at times I could go for a week with out getting an income. I used my transfers to buy the machine and start my spray painting business. This is a constant source of income and at times my friends hire the machine. I am therefore able to provide for my siblings from the income I get from the business. I also used part of my transfers to pay rent since I received the money at a time when I had paid the rent.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
My plan is to get into transport business because it is the only business that is always in season. I would like to purchase a motorcycle, but because it is quite expensive to acquire a new one, I will use the next transfer to purchase a used one that is in good condition. The savings that I will make out of the business will help me purchase a new one, then I can rent out the old one for extra income.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My life has changed because I now own something that I can brag of. It is also a nice way of covering the kind of life I am living here in Nairobi as my friends now think that I make a alot of money for me to purchase such an exepensive breed of coew.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I don't intend to live in Nairobi forever, so with part of the money that I received, I decided to invest in something that will benefit me whenever I decide to relocate back to the village. I bought a dairy cow(Calf) which I know in a few years will be beneficial in terms of milk production which I will sell for income. I also paid my rent and sent some of the moeny to my brother in college for his upkeep.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
Kenyan Economy has really deteriorated and for a hustler like me, coming across such an amount is like a dream. My wife and I were very excited when I received the money because it was the first time I ever received such an amount in my entire life.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My first priority will be to start new business of an mpesa shop agent because I feel the population is high and the transactions will be more compared to other regions. I will also open a small hotel for my wife here in Mathare. Secondly I want to use the money to build a house in upcountry. I inherited a piece of land and getting this money will help me in accomplishing by dream of having my own home. I also want to buy livestock in particular a cow in my rural area for production of milk and can sell to get money and support my younger brother in campus.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is gang violence/crime because in Utalii area there are gang groups who make it hard to feel safe. The security level here is of low quality and I do not see progress in security. I fear for my peers and siblings to be influenced into gang violence
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambition is to be able to provide a better life for my family by being a successful businessman. I will have my own kerosene and petrol pumps and get money from it. I also want to be able to own my own garage and drive a car so that my children can be proud of me.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
On my usual day I go to work in Eastleigh. I work in a car garage and I mostly attend to clients cars. I do car spraying but this depends with the flow of clients. And in the evening I go back home. I mostly spend my free the at home watching movies and TV shows, but also go to church.
