How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a plan to start a small business shop at home when I receive my third transfer, as I believe it will help me generate profit. This business will allow me to expand my activities and create a steady income that I can use to support my farming efforts. With the extra income, I will be able to buy seeds, tools, and other essentials to improve my farm. I also plan to reinvest some of the profits into the business to help it grow. This shop will be a source of financial stability for my family, and it will enable me to plan better for the future. I am confident that this plan will help me achieve long-term success.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
When the officers came, they were very respectful and kind. I appreciated how they treated me with dignity and listened to my needs. I felt that the process was smooth and helpful, and the officers were always ready to offer guidance. I did not notice anything bad from GiveDirectly and felt grateful for the assistance provided. I expressed that GiveDirectly had done well, and I was happy with the support I received.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had been struggling with no livestock and no stable source of income, so when I received the unconditional cash transfer, I saw it as an opportunity to change my situation. I decided to buy one cow for $200 and three goats for $150, something I had always dreamed of but never had the means to do. Having livestock will not only be a great future investment but also bring me joy as I now own animals for the first time. This is something that will help me in the future, especially in case of emergencies. Additionally, I used $50 to pay for my brothers' school fees, which has always been a priority for me. With the floods affecting our farm this year and sweeping away all the crops, I could not rely on farming as I usually do. The loss of my harvest meant that I could not pay for their school fees from the crops I usually sell. The transfer helped me cover this urgent need, allowing them to stay in school. With the remaining $50, I bought food since we had no food at home. We used to rely on farming and doing casual jobs to get by, but with everything destroyed, it was hard to make ends meet. Now, life is better, and even though my husband and I are yet to have children, we support each other in farming and working together to improve our lives. The transfer has brought us hope, and we are now able to plan for a better future.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a normal day for me. I was on my farm harvesting maize with my wife and sister when, at around 3 p.m., I heard a message come in. Upon checking, I saw that I had received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I called my wife aside to share the news with her, and I could see the joy in her eyes. We knew that we could finally speed up our maize harvesting by hiring labor.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am a crop farmer, and this year has not been lucky for me. I lost 1.5 acres of maize and an acre of melon, which was a great loss, but I didn’t give up. When the water receded, I replanted maize, and luckily, it did well. However, when it was ready for harvesting, I didn’t have the money, so my family and I were going to harvest it ourselves, which would have taken longer. With the rains, I was afraid I would lose it again. Thankfully, I received the GiveDirectly cash just in time, which helped me with the harvesting. I didn’t lose my maize for the second time. God bless you, GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Our maize on an acre of land was ready for harvesting, but I did not have the money to cover the costs. I had planned to do the harvesting with my wife and sister, which would have taken longer, and with the rains, we risked losing the crop. When I received my first transfer from GiveDirectly, I decided to prioritize the harvest. I spent $89 on harvesting and transporting the maize to the joint drying area. Additionally, at the time, my brother, who is in college, needed $300 for his fees. My dad, who used to pay his fees, sadly passed away three years ago, and now the responsibility has fallen on us, his siblings. I contributed $60 toward his fees while my other siblings covered the rest. From the remaining money, I spent $20 on food—we had maize, but we lacked other essentials like beans, milk, and other essentials. I added $13 to the remaining $12 and bought watermelon seeds, waiting for water to start planting. I rely on crop farming to support my family.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
At the moment my biggest challenge has been a lack of money to pursue my passion in farming. Recently I joined hands with my friends and planted a tomato farm. However, because of lack of money to plant my own farm this has been really challenging. For the cash transfers from Give Directly, I intend to plant two hectors of tomatoes which would be a good source of money and investment. I intend to spend about KES 53000 of the transfers on this venture. Through the cash transfers I will also be able to expand to other forms of farming such as growing butternuts since my farm had been destroyed by the floods. I plan to invest KES 50000 of the transfers on this. For the remaining KES 5000 I intend to purchase food for my family. With the transfers, I believe that my life will not remain the same again and I will change for the better thanks to Givedirectly.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I draw my happiness from my neighbours. This is because we live in harmony and always support each other when we face challenges. An excellent example of this is during the recent floods, we were able to help each other and we managed to live through the challenges brought by the floods. This brought me joy and happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My greatest challenge currently is the floods that wrecked havoc in our village. I had planted butter nuts on my farm and was about to harvest when floods came and destroyed it all. This has left me without money and I have difficulty providing for my family since the small amount I expected to get from the farm got taken by the recent floods. This saddens me so much and I have been left with worry and uncertainty about my family's future and survival.
