How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before receiving this transfer, I had major goals which I achieved with both transfers. However, I have a new goal of buying a dairy cow that we can milk so that we can cut the cost of buying milk. The production of milk will not only be for consumption but also for sale to get an extra income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am grateful to have been part of this project from Give directly since it has not only given us the freedom to spend the cash unconditionally but it also gave us a good opportunity to rebuild ourselves. I do not have a complaint since all the procedures were adhered to as we had been informed in our baraza.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the second transfer, I spent the whole of it in buying additional land since I had a small piece of land hence could not plant enough food crops. I am happy that I bought the additional one which I have already planted crops both for consumption and also cash hence can cater for school fees for my school-going children and also help in buying other household items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was so excited to receive a message bearing the good news that morning as I confirmed it with a heart full of joy. I was still at home with my wife then as it was a quarter past nine in the morning. On showing her that message, she was overjoyed to a point of getting emotional. This transfer came to us at the right time when we were really in need of it as we had been having a lot of plans but the insufficient financing could not allow us to execute.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
It is unbelievable that we now have an additional piece of land that we had never thought of owning soon even after knowing that we would receive the transfer. It was so convenient that it is just adjacent to our compound making it easy to fence it in after buying. This so far is the biggest difference in my daily life as the piece be useful in farming to increase farm production thus foods security for my household.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the first transfer, we had plans in place that we hoped to initiate to completion with that amount. Amidst our excitement and strategies towards our first spending, all the pans that we had stumbled when our neighbor whose land is adjacent to mine approached me with an offer to sell us a small part of it worth KES60000. We had to shut down all other projects and concentrated on buying that piece. We managed to make the first deposit of KES 30000 out of the transfer, used the remaining in fencing it all around, and the pre-existing one with the promise to sell one of our livestock to settle the remaining amount. The fencing process was completed in a span of one week and that is when I sold a heifer and made the last deposit of KES 30000 on the piece of land. Everyone in my household was glad about that instant opportunity to own an additional piece of land, and we are now looking forward to the second transfer that will help us in the completion of the few plans we had.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Currently, I am having two children in secondary school. I will use KES 30000 to clear school fees balance, I will then buy two cows with KES 40000. Now that this area is conducive to rearing goats, I will set KES 20000 to buy four goats. For the remaining KES 10000, I will buy food for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am usually happy from 4 PM, this is because the day has come to an end and I have managed to provide food and basic needs for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I don't have a reliable job to sustain my family. This has to lead me to struggle financially to provide school fees, food, and basic needs for my family.
