How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is really different at the moment. These transfers really came at a time when I really needed financial support because of the numerous challenges that I was facing. I am terminally ill I have an inflammation in the small intestine while my wife was involved in an accident and got both internal and external injuries and need medical attention. On the other hand, my family is really big, I have 7 children and two other children who were orphaned following my sister's demise. I pay school fees for these children and also cater for all their needs which is quite a burden on me considering the fact that I rely on casual jobs which bring little earnings. When these transfers came I paid their school fees and bought enough food which is going to take us for some time it was quite a relief on my side. Most part of these transfers also went to pay for the medical expenses for both my wife and I, we are feeling really much better and healthier and even able to go look for means to meet our family's daily needs, these transfers also helped me get a health cover, this has so far helped us cater for medical expenses and it's going to help us even in the future.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by giving us cash directly. With this, we are able to prioritize meeting our needs accordingly .
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spend the second transfers on buying a solar power system at KES 9000 this ensured proper lighting in all the rooms even together with the kitchen unlike earlier earlier when we used to share one small lamp across all the rooms and even the kitchen. I also spent KES 15000 on paying school fees for my two children who are in secondary school. The rest of the transfers went to medical expenses for my wife and I, she was involved in a motorbike road accident while I have an inflammation in the small intestine. most importantly was acquiring a health cover using these transfers which will help sort all the medical expenses easily and also in the future.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have lagged behind in most of the things in my household. I have children in school who were at the verge of dropping out of school. This has happened largely because of my health status which has taken a big part of my money and resources. I also have intentions of purchasing livestock for the household that would help me raise my family. Receiving this money would have a huge impact in my life.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I am done with all the days activities. This is the time that I get opportunity to relax and forget about my life's problems at least for a while.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is when my health started deteriorating. I have been having stomach problems since 2010 which has seen me visit several medical facilities seeking to put an end to this problem. This has strained the family resources and left us living poor. I hope to see things change going forward.
