How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Needs never end. As we grow so are our needs and wants. I am thankful for the support we received from Give Directly. My household living standards have improved courtesy of the transfers but I still have a new goal which is to put a retail shop. I have a grocery shop at the moment but due to the increase in household demands, the income from it will soon not be enough to cater to the needs. Having a retail shop alongside it will increase the profits I make at the end of the day which will play a great role when it comes to meeting my household needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Giving people the chance to decide on how to spend their money is one of the best ways of financial empowerment. The information given to everyone in the village at the enrollment stage encouraged people to wisely spend their transfers. I am happy to be amongst the people who benefited from the transfers and I do not have any complaints about the organization.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used 24500 KES of the second transfer to purchase 7 goats to add to the livestock I have for rearing. Livestock's have always come in handy whenever in need since I have always sold some of them to meet most pressing needs including school fees for my children. They are one form of investment that no one should lack because they reproduce hence additional goats at the end of the year. I also bought new bedding for my children for 15000 KES. They now have better sleeping conditions which have transformed them into jovial and proud children with improved self-esteem. The remaining 13000 KES I spent on foodstuffs for my family, especially the dry ones that can take them for a while.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was busy preparing breakfast for my children who were getting ready to go to school. It was around 7 am when I decided to check my mobile phone. I did not believe my eyes when I saw the Mpesa message from Givedirectly indicating that I had received my transfer. I was with my husband at home and I informed him about that great news we were very happy for receiving the transfer that mark a great change in our life for the better.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning livestock is the biggest difference in my daily life. Previously, the charcoal vending job that I was doing could not earn me enough income to support myself. I am now assured that my children will learn without any interruption, I will sell the livestock once they reproduce to cater for the education of my children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer to construct a separate house for my children this is because we were staying in the same room which was against the norms of our traditions. Furthermore, the house that I had was very small. I used KES 12,000 to build a one-roomed house for my grown-up kids by purchasing iron sheets and timber. In addition, I invested KES 20,000 in goat rearing an investment for my future. I will be able to sell them when I encounter any financial challenge as well as educate my 4 children. Lastly, I used KES 6000 to settle their fee balance since I had not been paying the fee for a full term. For the remaining amount, I bought sufficient foodstuffs for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means building a spacious house for my family. I have a family of seven members and we are all living in a one bedroom house which is not spacious. It lacks privacy. I will build a three bedroom house at a cost of KES 70000. I will use KES 30000 to buy ten goats as investment. I will also use KES 10000 to buy food for the family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The county government of Kilifi brought clean water buzzer for community use two weeks ago. That relieved me of walking for along distance to go get water. The relief water brought happiness to me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The current challenge I facing is lack of water. There is drought in our area. This has made me walk a distance of approximately 20km to go get water. A plastic of 20L goes at KES 50 at the water pond. The water is not clean and it has caused stomach problem to one of my children.
