How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have been able to make new goals and achieve them since I started receiving this money. I have been able to buy a piece of land that would have taken many years just to earn that amount. I was also able to buy livestock like goats. I have even managed to dress my family properly by buying them decent clothing. Lastly, I have even been able to lay school fees without any strain.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my own opinion, I think that GiveDirectly's objective to help people in need is something that they are doing well. This is because it has helped me to achieve my goals like owning a comfortable house and buying some goats which will produce and give me both food and income. I was even able to buy some land which I can do farming which would not have been possible before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With this recent transfer of money, I was able to buy roofing sheets worth KES.5000 which would continue with the home I am building. I was also able to buy a mattress worth Kes.5000 which has helped to give me a peaceful night after years of sleeping on the floor and having a bad back. My children had also been sent back home due to the school fees balance. I was able to pay for the three children a total of KES.3000.KES. 6000 was added with my mother's contribution to pay for a piece of land that we are buying. The remaining was spent on food and other miscellaneous things for building.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt very happy for receiving my transfer since I had never got such a huge amount at once. I was at the home relaxing while chatting with my neighbour who had visited me. I heard a message notification on my phone and after checking I realized that I had received my transfer from GiveDirectly. I had to wait for my husband to come home from work to share the good news with him and plan on how to use our transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is I am confident that I will finally be living in a decent and spacious house with my family once I complete the ongoing construction. I can't wait to see us relocating to a spacious two-roomed, Iron-roofed house. I had never visualized owning such a house in a very short period in my life due to the poverty that entangled our lives. I am very grateful to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent 30,000 to purchase building materials including 20 iron sheets, building poles, and set aside some to pay labour charges. The house that I had was very small to accommodate our family of 6 members and all belongings. I had desired to construct a specious one but I lacked the finances to purchase the building materials. Furthermore, l am planning to use my current house as a kitchen since I was cooking outside the house. In addition, I spent KES 3000 to purchase school uniforms, books and pay fees for my children. They had not started school despite reaching the right age of schooling due to the poverty conditions. I also invested the remaining amount in livestock rearing by acquiring 5 goats.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will solve my problem of food insecurity. I will buy 2 acres of land which will cost me 60,000 Kenyan shillings. I anticipate to get 10 sacks of maize in the new farm, which will sustain my family of 8 for 8 moths, unlike where am farming now where the land is infertile and I only harvest 3 sacks of maize which last for 2 months. This will not only solve the issue of food insecurity but will also create a sense ownership because where am farming the farm belong to my father in-law.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the morning, when I wake up healthy , and also my family members are healthy also
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship in my life is unemployment. I don't have money to buy the 2acres of land and also to cater for the basic needs of my kids . I only rely on my husband, who is doing causal labour, his salary is not enough for us to buy the piece of land and also to cater for all the basic needs of the family.
