How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, I do not have any new goals that I might need to mention because that we had discussed earlier with my spouse was achieved. We had been yearning to own it for a long because the previous one was family land and very small in size. Being a subsistence farmer I thought it would be wise to at all we could our land. I am so happy that during the rainy seasons I will not have to worry also it has eased the burden of leasing those of my friends.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly is the best NGO and it has been doing a great job in my entire village. It has brought a positive impact on the region and this is evident since most of us have iron-roofed houses. Also, all our children are studying comfortably with fewer disturbances unlike before whereby the majority were forced to drop out because of financial hardships. Therefore I do not see any area that GD needs to improve on.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the second transfer on clearing school fees of KES 15000 for my children who are in primary and secondary schools respectively. Also, I bought new uniforms and stationery for them. I am so glad that they will no longer be sent home regularly like before. This has been negatively affecting their performance because at times they would miss exams and end up repeating the same classes. I later bought a dairy cow at KES 15000 which I believe will uplift my living standards by selling milk. I finally spent the remaining amount of money to buy enough foodstuffs that would last us for a while.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt very happy for my receiving my transfer, I had never received such a huge amount that would transfer my life for the better. I remember it was at 10 am when I had just arrived home from fetching water for the family. I had left my phone in the house and upon checking it I saw the Mpesa message indicating that I had received the transfer in my account. I started planning on how best to utilize the transfer before withdrew it the following day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I currently able to meet the needs of my family especially food without much struggle. I purchased enough food stock with my transfer. Furthermore, the piece of land which I bought will help me to produce enough harvest once I start farming hence food security for the family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had desired to acquire a new firm for my family because the place where I use to plant my crops was very small and produce poor harvest since it has lost its fertility over the years. The produce from the farm could take our family of 10 members a month before it is over. I was struggling to get food for the family the rest of the year doing casual activities. I spent KES 45,000 to purchase an acre piece of land. I am intending to clear it to start farming. I am positive that I will have enough harvest from my farm hence sufficient food for the family. I also spent KES 2000 to clear the fees arrear for my 4 children who are still in primary school. The remaining amount I acquired was enough foodstuffs for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means food security to my household. This is because I do farming in a 1.5 acres piece of land that I was given by my father in law. The produce from this land is utmost 2 bags of 90kgs that sustain my household of 8 members for only 2 months. I am planning to spend Ksh 40000 of my transfers to buy a productive piece if land that can produce more harvest to sustain my family. I will also use a portion of the transfers to buy 2 indigenous dairy cows to produce milk for my own consumption and also to sell the surplus to earn an income. The remaining amount will help me to cater to other basic needs like food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is because at this time, I share dinner with my children something that makes me feel happy. Unlike in the morning and afternoon hours when I might even miss food for my children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity in my household is the biggest hardship that I have ever faced. This is because I a m a housewife and my husband is doing casual labour that earns him very little. Due to this, I have been struggling to put food on the table and sometimes, I seek help from my relatives something that ashames me.
