How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have bought my own land. I used to live with my parents, I was not happy about it because every time there was misunderstanding on small issues. I has always wished to own my own farm and build a house. When I received the second transfer I found it wise to invest on buying a land
I had some savings from the first transfer which I used to building a better house. Buy my own land. Currently I live peacefully with my children without any disturbance. I am so happy because I plan my work alone and do at a convenient time. My children do there homework and studying without any disturbance . I am so much grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has enabled us live a better life than before.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent 50,000 of the second transfer to purchase a piece of land. I used to live with my parents and I decided to buy my own farm. I also started a business of selling maize at the market. This earns me a daily income to meet other basic household needs including paying school fees for my children. The rest of the money I used on food and clothes for my children. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed my living standard.

My daily life has been under pressure of family needs and with little resources, I had my life has been so hard. It was around mid-morning when I received a new message and on checking it was a confirmation that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy knowing that I was relieved of the daily pressure I had carried for quite long.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am a single mother of three and I primarily depend on subsistence farming to see my family through. My family needs have always gone up making them overwhelming to sustain them. I love education that is why I have prioritized my children's education since I am assured that they have a better life. In the recent past, I had slowly sunk into depressions since I had not been able to raise my children's school fees. Looking at them spend their time at home while others studies have been my major headache. With the cash transfer from GiveDirectly, I have been able to take back my children to schools. I feel well relaxed enjoying humble minds since my children can pursue their dreams thus they will be able to join tertiary levels and later on have good employments. Educating my children is the biggest difference in my life brought by the cash transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a way of investing my transfers, I took KES5000 to buy a sheep. I preferred it since with time it will bear me offspring s that I will rely on for financial needs. I have children in various schools and raising their school fees had been an uphill task for me. When I received my cash transfer, I took KES15000 to pay for their schools and school uniforms. I am happy that they will be able to study comfortably thus pass their exams. In addition, I used KES30000 to build a new house. It is my happiness having my family enjoy the comfort of our home courtesy of GiveDirectly. I spent the remaining amount on my household items and daily basic needs; mainly furniture, clothing and food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means financial empowerment to me. These funds will enable me to venture into cereals business with a capital of $150 and also start up a Poultry rearing project that will cost me approximately $300 right from building a poultry unit, buying 15 chicken to start with, and their feeds. I also intend to buy a 2-acre piece of land for $600 to relocate in since my sister and I currently share the 1 acre we inherited from our parents.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Being a single mother engaging in casual jobs to fend for my family, coming back home every evening with food for my family after a tedious day having worked under the scorching sun in people's farms makes evening the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
After the demise of my spouse one year ago, my life took a different twist. My brother-in-law wanted to forcefully inherit my three children and I. He threatened to kill me when I declined this barbaric act and this made him burn down my house. I had to flee back home to be with my parents who gave me this 0.5-acre piece of land to live in with my children. I have been struggling since then as I try to pick up the pieces, after allthe emotional and psychological trauma I've been through. I do casual jobs to feed and clothe my children yet these jobs are never a guarantee to secure due to the remoteness of this area. This is the biggest hardship I face.
