How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
With an eye on the future, I intend to allocate my upcoming transfers towards purchasing goats, nurturing them, and allowing them to multiply. Once the goats have multiplied, I will have the opportunity to sell some of them, providing a valuable resource to address my needs. This strategic investment will also serve as a safety net in case of emergencies, offering a fallback option through the sale of goats to address unforeseen requirements. I am genuinely delighted and appreciative of the financial support, as it has significantly enhanced the quality of my life compared to my previous circumstances.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The past three months have been challenging for me as my health deteriorated rapidly. What initially seemed like a mild fever quickly escalated, leading to vomiting and a significant loss of weight and energy. Fortunately, with the assistance of my family members, I was promptly taken to Mariakani hospital and admitted for treatment. I incurred a substantial hospital bill during my stay, amounting to $34, which I managed to settle. I am immensely relieved that my health has improved, and I am currently feeling much better. Upon being discharged from the hospital, I spent $68 to purchase food for my family. The inclusion of fresh vegetables and fruits in our diet has significantly contributed to my swift recovery. I am grateful for the financial support I have received from Give Directly, which has been instrumental during this challenging period.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I deeply appreciate Give Directly for their initiative to financially support people in communities like ours. These transfers alleviate numerous hardships, with the most pressing one being hunger. With the received funds, I can contribute to our household needs and relieve the burden on my son, whose income from selling chewing sticks barely provides for our daily sustenance. My goal is to ensure that even after the transfers cease in a few years, hunger becomes a rare occurrence in our lives. As I am unable to engage in active work due to my age, I plan to accumulate wealth through goat rearing. Additionally, I aspire to start a small business selling vegetables or dried sardines to maintain a steady income flow.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My utmost desire has always been to support my son in providing for our family. However, due to my advanced age, physical labor is not feasible for me to earn money. Nonetheless, I believe that raising livestock can accumulate sufficient wealth. In the past, I had a herd of goats, but, they perished during the prolonged drought in our region. To revive my rearing venture, I saved $14 and plan to add it to future transfers to purchase my first goat. At the same time, my grandson, who suffers from epilepsy, needed medical attention. His father, struggling to make ends meet, couldn't afford the expenses. Thus, I contributed $10 to cover the transportation costs to and from the hospital. Additionally, since our household had run out of food the previous night, I used the remaining amount to buy food for the family. It served us for the entire month, and since then, we have never experienced hunger.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I want to make sure that I get at least two goats from this year's transfer to invest because of the protracted drought and the fact that I have no other income. Even though I have big investments planned for the near future, my survival depends exclusively on the monthly remittances. I have high hopes for the goats' ability to procreate, as I will eventually have a large number of animals.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
By the time I received the recent transfer, both my grandchild and I were sick. Poverty had prevented us from seeking medical attention. I was fortunate to receive the money at a time when I needed it. I took the initiative to take my grandchild, with whom I live, to the hospital for treatment, as well as to seek personal medical attention because I was also ill. I paid $15 for both the consultation and the treatment. Because our area's drought has been prolonged, I decided to spend the remaining $19 on food for my family. We are currently doing well, and I am grateful for the transfer assistance that I receive on a monthly basis. Sincerely, it is holding me back because if it weren't for the transfer, I would not be able to seek medical attention.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am appreciative of GiveDirectly's financial assistance. The unconditional transfers are assisting me with a variety of needs, including the purchase of food, which I am unable to meet since I have lost my main source of income. I have hope that the money I will get will enable me to rebuild my life and escape the grip of poverty. However, as many of us rely heavily on the transfer for survival, I implore the organization to stick to the deadlines for sending the transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I made the majority of my living from farming. I grew enough maize, beans, and vegetables on the farm to feed my family and sell the extra at the market. I was able to meet my daily demands because of the substantial profit I gained from selling the farm's produce . Life in the community has become challenging as a result of the drought that has been there for the previous two years. Due to a lack of food from the farm, I am forced to pay excessively expensive rates for it in the stores. As a result, I spent $5 on meals when I got my second transfer. I rely significantly on my son, who makes a living selling local toothbrushes in Mariakani, to send me money. He was having financial difficulties and was unable to send me money. I decided to buy food that will last for a few days in order to avoid going hungry. In addition to purchasing food, I also paid a $15 medical bill for my grandchild, who was admitted to the hospital because he was unwell. This made sure he received medical attention and recovered fully from the illness he had attracted. I kept the remaining $10 and will use it to buy a goat when I get my next transfer. My long-held dream of having livestock will finally come true as a result of this.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment the funds actually arrived on my phone I was actually seated back home. I felt an instant surge of relief and this is because it was completely unexpected to see the arrival of the funds at that time.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
For me it is actually the fact that I could finally afford a meal and not having to worry about when the next one would be. I am grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As soon as I realized I had received the transfers I decided to deal with matters concerned with nourishment. This is because we barely made any have is due to drought and also since the cost of living had gone high, hunger was our biggest challenge. That is why I went ahead and used the KES 1,200 that I had received and purchased five packets of maize flour, a kilogram of beans and cooking oil.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I'm an old widow partly dependent on my children and also sells firewood and charcoal to get some income. I haven't been so effective in generating enough income given the physical nature of charcoal burning and the fact that I'm above seventy years old right now. I have been longing for more passive ways of generating income and I believe my turn has just come. When I get this money I want to start livestock farming specifically focusing on goats. I will keep these so that I can sell them later as per need.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We normally conduct a table banking here in the village and about twice a year, we get to share the money. We recently held an event about a month ago where we had a big celebration with food and drinks in plenty and everyone ate to their fill. I was really happy that day because I got to exchange ideas with people, be part of the feast and was also handed around 2500 KES as my share of the money.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest challenge is lack of a reliable source of income. I'm a little too old to effectively burn charcoal or split enough firewood to keep a constant flow of income. Therefore I have an arrangement with my son who provides a lot for me. He agreed to be taking care of me by taking me in with his family and I can only cheap in on buying supplies occasionally
