How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My current objective is to build a little poultry coop for my fowl. They don't have a set spot to sleep, and when it's time to lay eggs, they even come to my house to do so. This is why I came up with this aim. As a result, my house is now disorganized. I have been saving for the same from the revenue I receive from my business, and I will soon build the house.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is excellent in everything. You now have a direct channel to the locals. You regularly visit the ground to inform us of your plans and noble intentions, allaying any worries and apprehensions we might have about you. You provided us with non-refundable funds, which enabled us to complete a number of improvements in this village. Thanks to GiveDirectly, I never would have imagined that I would own a business and that my kids would be in school by this time of the year. Continue aiding people; there is nothing to adjust, you are just perfect.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Four of my school-aged children were intermittently attending class at the time of my second transfer as a result of school costs. I was also struggling with how I should send my firstborn, who was due to start junior high school. After cashing it out, I gave the most urgent needs priority. I spent $200 on some shopping as well as the child's first term expenses for junior secondary school. After that, I spent $46 to retain the three primary school students in the classroom for their studies. I decided to pay $170 to get my kids two beds and two mattresses so they could sleep soundly because they previously had to cram into a little traditional bed. They are now pleased, and I'm glad about it since they sleep well. In addition, I spent an additional $65 for a burglary door because I was sick of constantly replacing wooden doors that termites were occasionally destroying. I utilized the remaining money to launch a home-based alcohol distribution business since I needed a business to provide some revenue for me. The business is doing well, and I am glad that it enables me to support my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home with my two children when I received a message confirming the receipt of my first transfer. I could not contain my excitement when I learned that I had just received the money I had been hoping for. Even though my children had no idea what was going on with my celebrations, they kept staring at me as I jumped around the house. Because it was still early, I had to go to a nearby shopping center and collect a portion of the money before using the remainder to settle my debts via mobile money transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the complete transformation of my family's daily operations. I have accomplished a lot in the last month that would not have been possible without the free cash transfer from GiveDirectly. My children are eating well, sleeping well, and have their school fees cleared as they begin a new term, as opposed to previous months when they were denied access to their schools due to massive arrears.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I was using rechargeable solar lighting bulbs that I purchased on a hire-purchase basis and paid for in weekly installments. Even though I had not been consistent in making the payment, I am grateful that they were considerate enough to continue lighting up my home. They turned it off the month before I received the transfer because I had defaulted a lot and had to look for a full amount to be given the services back. The first transfer bailed me out when I paid off a $70 debt, allowing me to enjoy lighting as well as the use of a radio that came with the lighting equipment. Previously, I was reliant on a grocery store that I had to close because my mother became ill and I needed to be there for her as well as my three school-going children. I am glad she's feeling better and can cook for herself again. I also built a new house to replace an old hut that was almost falling. Termites had destroyed the walls, and the roof leaked during rainy seasons. I spent $300 on construction materials and labor charges. We are now content to live in a warm room.  I also paid $50 in school fees for my three children and purchased five chickens and two ducks for $25, with the intention of breeding and selling their products and chicks in the future. The remainder was later spent on food for my family of five, as well as miscellaneous expenses during the Christmas season.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My business! Restarting my job which collapsed 3 months ago is my greatest desire. This will guarantee me the opportunity to focus on planning for the future of my 4 children. With this money, I intend to spend $200 to act as my capital since I already have the stall. In addition, this will make me disregard the stress that I have gone through since my mind will be fully engaged. On the other hand, I will spend a better portion of the transfer ($300) repairing my house including smooth-finishing the floor which is currently made of adobe. The remaining amount will help me to support my children's education as well as to meet our very basic needs like food and new clothes before I become stable in my job. Hence, this is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite having gone through tougher situations like nursing my mother who has been sick, I am so grateful today to see her faring well. This motivates me so much and I am positive about restarting my fruits and vegetable business again. Thus, I consider my mother's better health as what has brought me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My vegetable vending job collapsed 3 months ago because I spent the capital to pay my mother's hospital bill. This has compelled me to stay idle at home, a situation that has forced me to depend on my husband who is a motorbike taxi. His daily income is usually $5 and this goes directly to settling our very basic needs, especially food. Being jobless makes me feel like an irresponsible mother and a burden to my husband. Therefore, I consider the lack of a reliable source of income as my biggest challenge.
