How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am an ECDE teacher and I make 5000 shillings a month. I was struggling raising school fees for my three children and so I had really wanted to start another business to substitute my income. I was however forced to change my goal to paying school fees since I had school fee balances pending. I decided to cover this with my second transfer. I also had wanted to finish my house that I had already started but hadnt out in any windows nor had I put internal doors within the house. My other goal was to get a cow for the purpose of milk and getting calves that would come in handy with financial emergencies.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am so happy and grateful to give directly. I bought a cow, and the cow now has given birth and I have a calf. This to me is a wonderful thing I never thought this would be a reality. I am happy that as much as I didnt start the business I hoped, this terms fee for my children is settled and I would not have to worry about it and I can redirect my money to other home needs
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My first transfer helped me meet my goal of finishing to biuld my home. I used to kibe in a thatched house which I had brought down and began building a iron roofed house. I had started biulding but I ran out finances during the process. I had not installed the windows and even though it had the main door inside the house the doors separating rooms wasn't bought. I bought window frames at 8000 shillings and glasses for the windows at 5000 shillings. I was able to have this fixed and I moved into the new house. I was also able to get a door that was also put in the house at 5500 shillings. I also got a cow with my first transfer and the cow was expectant. Now it has given birth and I am getting milk though it is still little since the grass in our area hasn't grown so well. I used 40,000 shillings from my second transfer to pay fees for my children in secondary school. I also bought a few hens to help with school shopping when my kids resume school.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was still morning hours and I was leaving class since I teach pre-unit students when I checked my phone and realized that I had received the promised funds. My heart was filled with joy on seeing this and I immediately called to inform my spouse about the good news. He was equally overjoyed and kept on praising GiveDirectly and how they're God sent.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have been able to live in the spacious house that I had left incomplete for some months due to insufficient funds. I had no hope of completing it this year since I had decided to concentrate on paying school fees for my children since their education was of more importance to me. Living in this new house makes me happy and grateful to GiveDirectly for making this possible.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my transfer, I spent KES 15000 to complete the construction of a house for my family. We had started building this house but left it incomplete since we had decided to concentrate on paying school fees for our children to avoid them from staying at home while we concentrated on things that were not urgent. In addition, I spent KES 30000 to buy a dairy cow as a way of investing this money and also used KES 5000 to clear fee arrears for my children. I will be using income from the sale of surplus and the money that I usually spend on buying milk to pay school fees for my children. Using the remaining amount, I bought some food for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have always had an ambition to stay around with my husband at home and start a business that will feed my family, Givedirectly transfers have come at the right time and that I plan to spend KES.70,000 to start a shop and spend the remaining amount to vanish the house that I had started. My husband work a way from home as a driver, and he left me with three children who are in school, also being an ECD teacher, what I earn is not enough to cater for our daily needs in the family. It's been a struggle for years and we appreciate the transfer from Givedirectly.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I love playing with children and interacting with them ,during the day when in school I spend most of my time to engage with children in order to understand their abilities and be able to nature them. Thus my happiest part of the day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have two children who are in school and because we earn very little money with my husband, it has been a routine that they are sent home for school fees, we have been thinking of what we can as a family for us to pay the money for school on time, that's the reason we look forward to start a business for us to supplement.
