How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
currently buy and sell cabbages during market days, and it has been bringing in enough money to feed my family for a week. In the coming year, I plan to develop my vegetable business and set up roughly two more stalls in the market and sell more and different vegetables.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
One thing that Give Directly excels at is transferring unconditional cash to recipients, which means that everyone had the opportunity to use the money in their own unique ways to meet various needs. This has also assisted many people in achieving financial independence through various forms of business, and the relationships between people in the villages have greatly improved as a result.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my second transfer of $397.38, my initial plan was to spend it on expanding my one-room house into a three-room one because it was too small and extremely embarrassing for our family of six—my husband, our four children, and myself—to sleep in one room. I ultimately spent $300 doing that. In addition, it was crucial to me that we had access to food so that we could concentrate on other needs and spend the remaining $ 230 to buy enough food to sustain us for four months.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was working in my farm that day at around 4:00 pm when I heard my phone ring and upon checking I confirmed that I had indeed received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy that I was finally going to be able to pay school fees for my children who had huge school fees arears. I only informed my mother in law of the same and she realized that she had received hers too. The whole village was in a jubilant mood. I could hear people walking along the road with everyone very busy trying to withdraw the money as soon as they could.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is since I started receiving payments from GiveDirectly is the peace of mind that came with it and the happiness spread across my family members. Never before have I been able to clear a whole years school fees for anyone of my children. I felt happy and proud to have paid for two in full and the assurance that my children shall not be sent home for school fees gives me so much joy. It also gave also gave a helping hand to my husband whom we have been depending on for a long time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent $ 300 to pay school fees for my two children who are in secondary school. I had fee balances amounting to $50 and one of my children just joined secondary school. The $300 that I paid was able to clear school fees arears and at the same time paid ahead for the two for one year. Without GiveDirectly, we would have entirely depended on my husband who works as a driver which would always end up straining the little income that he makes. We are so grateful for the support thus received from GiveDirectly and for what it has done for us as a family. The remaining amount of $250 was used to buy food and clothes for my family. The money came at a time that the cost of living was very high and putting food on the table for the family was such a to ll order. It provided so much relief to not only me but my entire family.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I have a total of seven children in school, 2 in secondary and the rest in primary. The burden of having them in school is overwhelming because I have to pay up to $300 every year which is impossible. Being a vegetable seller, I earn $10 every which again is spent on buying food. I have a well-wisher who pays school fees for my two children in secondary and I have another joining them next year. It will be shameful of me to request the well-wisher to again pay. I intend to use $200 of my transfer to make sure that there is a seamless transition of my child from primary to secondary school.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Three weeks ago my husband, Richard, who has been an alcohol addict pledged to abandon the habit. Alcohol has been the cause of many domestic wrangles in my family and I am happy that he has not come back home drunk since then.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have a large family of 11 members and making them food secure has been my main challenge. I am a business lady selling vegetables at Kapkwen center only on market days. I earn $ 10 every week from the sale of vegetables and this is not enough to sustain my family for even 3 days. My husband is a heavy alcohol drinker and he hardly offers a helping hand making me the sole breadwinner.
