How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My biggest dream is to renovate my humble house. Right now, those bothersome termites have wreaked mayhem on the old wooden poles supporting my home, and I'm determined to fix things up before it becomes a real disaster. So, once I've got a bit of extra cash in hand, I plan to give my house a makeover. Instead of just replacing those weakened poles, I'm thinking of adding some strong pillars to make it more solid and stylish. It's not just about improving the structure; it's about creating a comfortable haven for my family to thrive in. That's my goal, and I can't wait to see my renovated house standing tall and proud.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I can't believe how amazing GiveDirectly is! It gave me money without any strings attached, and it has been a game-changer. I could finally make choices that were right for me and my family. Plus, it didn't just hand over the cash and disappear; they kept checking in on us to see how we were doing. It's so reassuring to know they care about what happens after the money is given. GiveDirectly has truly made a positive difference in my life and our community.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I remember the day the GiveDirectly cash transfer arrived, like a gift from the heavens. My heart swelled with gratitude and relief. My grandson had been kicked out of school because we couldn't afford his fees, and his father, my son, was stuck in despair, not knowing how to help. With $200 of the amount, I gave my son to pay off his outstanding fees. The joy on my grandchild's face when he returned to his studies was worth more than all the money in the world. It gave our family hope. Then there was my daughter-in-law, a true blessing in my life. She had cared for me so lovingly in my old age, and her parents were pressuring us for her dowry. I couldn't let her leave; she was family. So, I used another $200 to fulfill that commitment, securing her place with us. Thereafter, I used the remaining money on food. It was a simple pleasure, having enough to eat without constantly worrying about our next meal.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 10 am while I was preparing some lunch for my children who had gone to school when I received a message on my phone. Since I am illiterate, my daughter-in-law who was with me at home was of great help in translating the message for me. When she informed me what the message was all about, I jumped and ululated in happiness. The information that I had received $550 from GiveDirectly into my account was the source of all my happiness. My heart broke down at thanksgiving for receiving such a huge amount of money at once.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The vivid difference that I can attest to before and after receiving the transfer is how GiveDirectly enabled me to construct a house for my son. Initially, he used to sleep in his brother's house where he lacked freedom and this made him so inferior. As of now, he is very vibrant and happy since he owns a house courtesy of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, I first bought a calf for $60 to resemble GiveDirectly as a sign of gratitude. Thereafter, I decided to build a house for my son, who had been sleeping in his elder brother's house. This made him unhappy since he lacked the freedom to do his own stuff and also there was no privacy for his brother. Therefore, I entrusted him with the money to buy the building materials as well as supervise the house to completion. I am pleased to see him comfortable now since he has his own house. This has made him more vibrant and happy something that gives me peace of mind.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
It is so impressive to me when I see my neighbor's house is smooth-finished on the walls and the floor. This gives someone more respect and it improves self-esteem. I have wished to have my house look decent but due to a lack of money, it has remained incomplete with adobe materials. With this money, I intend to improve the quality of my house by plastering its walls and smooth-finish its floor using cement. This will reduce the dust which has been the basic factor in my deteriorating health as well as lowering my esteem. To ensure this comes to reality, I intend to spend utmost $500 to offset this. The remaining amount will help me to buy a new mattress to replace the old one which is not in good condition. Also, I will buy 5 goats to act as my investment plan. What a life to enjoy by receiving this money!
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite the health challenge that I am currently facing, I am still grateful for my 3 sons who have ensured there is good cooperation among themselves unlike before. Their teamwork has brought peace to our home and consequently, we can get at least 2 meals in a day. I am also optimistic about seeking proper medication since they can now sit together and plan for the needs of the family. What a blessing to me as a mother!
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently, I am experiencing many challenges but financial constraints top the list. This means it has not been easy to settle some of my very basic needs like seeking proper medication despite having been diagnosed with ulcers 2 years ago. I have struggled to seek medication from our local health centers but my state is yet to improve, which prompts me to visit a referral hospital. What pains me most is the lack of money ($10) to facilitate the transport and this has compelled me to stay at home hopelessly.
