In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Our village is slowly transforming since people started receiving the transfers. Most people have formed rotational savings groups and invested the shares they earn in various livelihood activities. I did not know I would ever construct another house but now I am hopeful that soon I will own one. We are happy and thankful that the support came right when we needed it the most and allowed us to spend on all we had been wishing to accomplish. Nothing was done contrary to the promises we were given by GiveDirectly a reason behind everyone's happiness.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Our house went down almost a year ago leaving me and my six children to stay in our single room kitchen. My spouse is a bus conductor in town, but he says he earns little from it leave me to cater to my children in most cases. I make KES 1000 weekly from the charcoal business which we mainly use on meals and some to pay for the children's school fees. We recently formed a rotational savings and loaning group where I saved the entire second transfer. I will later use my shares to purchase building materials for constructing a new house.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was in the kitchen, which had been our home since the collapse of our main house, preparing porridge for the children. Since there was no food, this would have helped in stopping them from nagging and crying because they were hungry. When I got the message confirming that I had received money from give directly, I was very delighted. I immediately went out to buy some meals so my children could have something to eat.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
These transfers changed my life. So, I can confidently say there's a great difference in my life. A salary Of KES 3000 per month, and that of my husband combined, was barely enough to sustain us leave alone put up a new structure to replace the old one that collapsed due to heavy rains. School fee payment was also a problem. When I received the funds, I started saving up so I could build a new house and also have some emergency funds for my children's school fees.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used to have a two-roomed mud house where I lived with my six children and husband. Unfortunately, it collapsed due to heavy rains. Luckily, no one was hurt and we managed to salvage most of our belongings. We then moved to the kitchen. The financial hardships made it hard for us to get a decent meal. So, I used KES 600 to buy food and then saved KES 500 towards building a new house that will cost KES 12,000.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Imagine seeking shelter in my mother-in-laws' kitchen because my house collapsed 8 months ago! This situation has brought me shame and I have desired to construct my house to earn back my lost dignity. My husband has already bought 15 pieces of iron sheets but he has failed to construct the superstructure due to lack of money. I need about 30000 KES to offset this plan. To ensure this comes to reality, I intend to be saving my first 10 months' transfers. This will cater to all the expenses of constructing the house. Receiving this money, therefore, means restoring my lost dignity for lacking privacy.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When my house collapsed, I got worried about how to shelter my family. Fortunately, my mother-in-law allowed me to occupy her kitchen as I prepare to construct my house. This relieved me from the unplanned unrest, something that gave me peace of mind. Hence, I consider this as what has brought joy to me in the last 6 months.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My house collapsed in May 2021 and since then, I have failed to construct another one due to lack of money. This has forced me and my 6 children to seek shelter from my mother in-laws' kitchen. Since this room is congested and full of soot, we have had frequent health problems such as coughs. Also, my children lack enough space for studies, which has directly affected their performances. Hence, these are some of the main challenges that I am currently facing.
