How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different in that through this money, I have a pair of oxen to aid me in my farming. I am assured of doing my farming early and timely for better harvests. I am expecting to get a good harvest because I will be cultivating my whole acreage and utilise it maximally. Now that I have been able to build a house for my children, they will no longer be troubled to seek shelter elsewhere at night.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion as a beneficiary, I think GiveDirectly does well in selecting and enrolling the needy households to enable them change their lives by giving out the money. I don't see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of the second transfer to buy a mattress and a new bed to sleep on. I used to sleep on the floor since I lacked the money to buy new bedding. I now managed to replace them after many years. My children had also been seeking shelter elsewhere at night, thus I took KES 25000 to build a house for them. I bought enough building materials to facilitate this. They no longer have to shelter in the neighborhood at night. I spent the remaining amount to do a shopping on my family's basic needs such as foodstuffs since even providing for them was a bit difficulty.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Owning the pair of oxen is the biggest difference in my daily life since I had none previously. I used to hire from neighbours which were costly to me. Through the transfer, I was able to purchase a pair of oxen which will not only increase my acreage but also ensure early preparations and timely planting.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I saw the notification early in the morning. On checking to confirm, it was from GiveDirectly informing me that I had received my first transfer from them. I was filled with happiness and joy for it was my first time to receive such an amount of money in my life. It was a fortune that I never anticipated in my life.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer to buy a pair of oxen. Initially, I used to hire from neighbours so as to plough my large acreage for robust yields. The cost of hiring was very high for me. Thus owning my own pair would help me manage a bigger acreage at no cost as well as ensuring that early land preparation for timely cultivation. In addition to this, I spent a portion of the transfer to pay for my son's fees who was joining a driving school. Through this, he will become a better person who can be employed to depend upon. I also paid a portion of the money to younger children who are in other levels of education so as to continue their studies without any disruption because of fees. I spent the rest of the amount to shop for food for my family and clothing for my children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means adding more livestock to my current herd of about 5 cows and several goats. This is because livestock is a very lucrative business in my village, animals do very well here compared to crops due to the unpredictable weather and also fetch very good prices at the market. I also get products such as milk from the animals which am able to sell and earn extra income to meet my family's needs of food and education with ease.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Afternoon is the happiest part of my day because during this time my children are away at school, my husband is out herding the animals and I get ample time to myself, without distraction, where I can meditate about my life and how to improve on it.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest hardship has been inadequate finances. During the drought period of 2016/2017 I had 30 cows and only 4 survived. Being my only source of livelihood and with 10 children to look after, life became very hard and I was no longer able to sufficiently provide food, education and other basic needs for my family. To date, my husband and I are still struggling to get back on our feet.
