How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
As of now, I have not developed any goal that I can accomplish once I get some money. this is because my mind works well when planning for something that is seen rather than just an idea with no prospects of when it will be put into reality since the mechanism of handling it which is money is nowhere to be seen.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Sincerely speaking, GiveDirectly helped me greatly and I am grateful for that. It enabled me to get a house something that I was not seeing it coming anytime soon. It also enabled me to get a modern bed and mattress as well as pay school fees for my six primary school children using the first transfer. Initially, I used to make and sell charcoals for me to pay school fees something that was very tiresome and unreliable hence my children were ever sent home for fees unlike now after getting the transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the second transfer, I sat down and calculated how well to spend the money. the idea that outweighed the rest was to build a house since the one I had was on a verge of collapsing. Considering that, I bought some construction materials that is; interlocking blocks for KES 11000.00, ten bags of cement for KES 7000.00, six tones of building sand for KES 4000.00, and nails for KES 2500.00. Thereafter, I contacted the contractor and I paid him per day. For the remaining amount, I bought some food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 AM when I was at my daily hustle when my mobile phone started ringing, it was alerting me of a new message. Since I am illiterate, I had to go back home and seek someone to check the contents for me. Luckily after arriving home, my elder son was around and after checking, he realized that it was an Mpesa message that I had patiently been waiting for. We were all happy because we knew that the cash would bring a positive impact on our lives. I remember having rejoiced the whole day with my kids and thanking God for the blessings.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
A lot of positives have been happening in my life but the fact that I now have been able to clear school fees for my children has brought the biggest difference in my life. One is in high school and the other six are in primary schools respectively. Paying school fees has been my biggest challenge for years considering that my spouse was involved in a road accident and ever since I have been taking the role of the family's breadwinner. I had been relying on the odd jobs which very low incomes and sometimes bringing on the table was not attainable. I was always worried that my children will drop out of school because I couldn't afford to pay the fees on time. I had stretched all my sources but nothing was working out and this was the time that I was so hopeless. I have been also trying to walk in all government offices requesting bursaries but I have not been lucky. My children's education greatly affected as they could be often be chased out of school and this made me feel like I had failed them as their parent. I am so happy that now this has been fully sorted and I am assured of a brighter future for all my kids courtesy of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on paying school fees for my seven children who are both ins secondary and primary schools. They have been on and off which was like a routine especially whenever they were about to sit for exams. It was so stressful and demotivating because most of the days, they could miss the tests. I also bought some building materials such as pieces of iron sheets at KES 24000 which I am planning to construct a new house since my previous one is in poor condition and not spacious at all. My children had to shelter at their grandmother's houses which were also not spacious and I had to find a permanent solution on the same. In addition, I bought new clothes and shoes for my kids for the Christmas celebrations and I am happy they had a memorable one. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a sustainable and reliable source of income. I currently depend on charcoal business to provide for my children's needs. With my husband who is not working due to an accident he got, it has become very hard to cater all my family needs alone. Therefore, I plan to buy goats which will be like a future investment for my family. I will use the goats when they give birth to pay school fees in the event I fail to do it with my charcoal business.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Three months ago my husband got an accident. It came at a time when we as family were completely depending on him. Although it's not a good thing but I really thank God he didn't die but had some minor injuries which are currently healing. This has been a good thing for me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband got an accident three months ago. With all my children entirely depend on me to provide for their needs, it has become very hard to find enough food for them. Sometimes we go one to two days without a meal. This situation has deteriorated the health and school performance of my children very severely.
