How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new plan is to complete the construction of our house and buy additional livestock . When we received the irst transfer we were able to buy some of the building materials like iron sheets and building posts and I am now looking forward to buying other building materials with the savings that I have made from my motorcycle business and thereafter buy an additional dairy cow. We currrently own one dairy cow and the additional one will just make sure that we have milk all year round which will also be an alterntive source of income that will improve our livelihoods as well.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did very well in giving us the money free from conditions on how to spend it. What was even sweeter is the fact that we were not required to pay back the money at a later date. This made so many people appreciative of the transfer and it is evident in how they made good use of the money.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 45000 to buy a second hand motorcycle and used the remaining amount of KES 5000 to buy my own clothes and food for the family. Before receiving these transfers, I used to operate someones motorcycle and the income that I made from it was just enough and sometimes even hardly enough to feed my family. I used to make at most KES 400 per day which were often spent on buying food for the family leaving us with very little or othing at all to save. I now make the same amount of KES 400 per day after buying food and other family essentials. Our living standards have greatly improved and as we speak today I have savings of up to KES 10000-something that I had never imagined I would be in a position to do. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for this transfer that has transformed my family in a big way. We have one child and we are optimistic that his life will be better and more secured.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9a.m and I was on my daily business of riding people from one place to another since I am a boda boda rider.I heard a notification message on my phone upon checking, it was a confirmation receipt of cash transfer from Givedirectly.I immediately called my wife and informed her about the exciting news and she was overjoyed.I also informed her that I would withdraw the money later in evening and take it home.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life after receiving the first transfer is rearing a cow of my own with an assurance of getting sufficient milk per day.I am glad that Givedirectly has made my dream come through and I hope in future we will get surplus of milk for sell hence enabling us earn an extra income.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving this transfer brought a lot of joy to all my family members. After a long period of depending on my mum to give us milk, I was sure that once I receive the cash transfer it would allow me to purchase a dairy cow which will provide us with sufficient milk. Since my mother didn't have adequate milk she would only give us one cup of milk daily which could not sustain us rather we would use it to feed our young child. With Kshs.35,000 I bought a good Friesian cow which at least can give us one litre of milk per day and in the future am hoping it will give us surplus milk. With Ksh.3,000 I bought a sack of maize which will sustain us for a couple of months hence won't struggle a lot in providing my family basic needs. In addition, I use Kshs.4,000 to buy timber which I am going to use to construct a new house once I receive my second transfer. With the remaining amount, I spent on buying clothing for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My family is still young and I have one small house, so when i get this money I would like to build another bigger house. This house will accommodate visitors when they visit. I feel bad when I have to take my visitors to sleep in my neighbors house. Taking visitors to someone's house oftenly my bring disagreement and even interfere with their privacy. This house will cost around KES 20000. I have my own trees so I will cut them for timber so as to reduce cost.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is the time I get to rest from my motorcycle taxi. I enjoy spending time with my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship has been a lack of money. I am employed to operate motorcycle taxis. My earning per day is KES 300 and I share equally with the owner of the motorcycle. Take home money is only KES 150. This money is only enough to buy family needs like food thus no money is left for other projects like building a house.
