How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My main focus now is to take my second son to college. He is now two years from the time he completed his secondary education. My projection is to enroll him in his college of choice by mid-next year. To achieve this I have been saving in one of the financial institutions intending to borrow a loan which will aid him to pursue the course of his choice.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does very well in terms of enrolment. With the help of the village elder, they could enroll every member of the village who fit their registration policies. The level of transparency in the enrollment process was top-notch. They even provided some clarification to some members who were not legible. This was a perfect exercise conducted.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the second transfer, I had to talk to my two sons till we got to a consensus. I aimed to take them to college. But since the elder one had stayed for three years before joining college and the young one had stayed for two years, we agreed I take the elder one to his two-year course as I also source for other means to take the young one to college too. Therefore I used $500 to take him to college. For the remaining $20 I bought some food. Seeing my son who had lost hope of joining college after his secondary education was my joy. I am now happy and relieved. At least I am now focusing on the young son.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was still at my daily hustle at exactly 5 in the evening when I heard my friends saying that they had received their first cash transfer. I decided to check my phone as well since it was on silent mode. I was surprised to learn that I had also received mine. I honestly couldn't concentrate anymore due to the excitement and I opted to rush home.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was finally able to most my hotel business which I have been operating for years. This has been the only source of income that I relied on for my family's upkeep. However, I used to experience so many challenges like insufficient capital among others. This has therefore been affecting the whole business in general because in a day I would earn a profit of KES 100 which hardly sustained the wants of my three children. Being the sole breadwinner of the family, I was not able to pay most of my bills on time. I am now so happier and grateful because after expanding it, I have been earning good profits. Nowadays I no longer have to strain in meeting my needs also I am in a position of saving a portion for emergencies.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 10000 of my first transfer on boosting the hotel business that I have been operating in the village. It was almost collapsing and I thank God GiveDirectly came at the right time. Also, I am planning to send my son to college once with the remaining amount of money. He finished his high school education two years ago and I couldn't raise the fees needed. I am grateful because I am certain he will soon accomplish his dream.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am thankful to have a food business that is not doing so bad. I have for a long time desired to expand it. This is the opportune time to add more options to my menu and also do some renovation and give it a new face. This should attract more customers and that would make me so happy.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Even in these harsh economic times, I am so glad that I get enough to feed my children. I am so delighted when they are happy. As we pray for brighter days ahead, God has been faithful thus far.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In my business, I lack some essential electronics like a fridge. If I had one, I would buy food in bulk and preserve it. I would also sell soda and other soft drinks. This would add to my profit and help me see my children through school easily.
