How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new goals apart from the ones that I had in mind during the registration. Through the can transfers, I have successfully been able to start a business selling clothes in town. Initially, I used to be jobless and I am grateful now that I have a reliable source of income. I no longer strain like before in providing for the family's basic needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did a super job by offering the support in form of money to every needy household. To add to that, the money was unconditional and this has empowered us to achieve a lot. Also, it was free and during the enrolment, no one was asked for a bribe at all. So far this is the best organization that offers generous services to the beneficiaries
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 20000 of my second transfer on starting up a business selling new clothes. I have been dreaming to operate it for quite some time and I couldn't afford it because of the unavailability of capital. Also, I gave my spouse KES 20000 and bought new gadgets for the barbershop business that he has been operating before. Initially, he used to hire from friends which were very expensive. I am so thankful that the business is now stable with good incomes. Life has been running so smoothly from the additional earnings. We have been able to cater to all the family's needs on time. Finally, with the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuff for my family and other household items that I was lacking.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
This was one of the best moments of my life. I was at home going about my daily duties when I received a message notification at about 9.30 a.m. I checked my phone and saw that I had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy and called my husband to inform him of the good news. I couldn't believe that I finally had the money to start the business I had been wishing for, for so long.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
It makes me so happy that this transfer has enabled me to meet the needs of my family. Before, I used to depend on my tailoring business to earn a living. I, however, would earn less than KES 5,000 a month. This amount is not enough to cater for food, clothing and education for my two daughters. This situation made our life quite stressful.
Since receiving this transfer from GiveDirectly, I have been able to set up a barbershop. I am pleased with the progress so far. On a good day, we can earn a gross profit of up to KES 2,000 a day. This has enabled me to provide for my family's needs. We can afford to have three meals a day, as opposed to just two. It feels amazing.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a mother, one of my biggest priorities in life is to ensure that I provide the basic needs for my children. So I spent KES 10,000 on the purchase of food including maize, rice, beans, sugar and water. I then spent KES 42,000 on setting up a business. This amount catered for rent, electric shavers and everything necessary to set up a barbershop. I'm so appreciative of everything that this transfer has enabled me to achieve.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means upscaling my dressmaking business. I have only one machine and I do my work at home. My house has one bedroom and it's not spacious for the family and also for me to do my business. I will buy one more machine at a cost of Ksh. 15000 and build a small house for my business at home. This will cost Ksh. 35000. I will also buy materials for my business worthy Ksh.20000. Currently I do make repairs and I earn Ksh. 2000 per month. When I upscale my business , I will earn approximately Ksh. 10000 per month.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest Part of the day is in the evening. This is because whenever I quarrel with my husband over the day, we resolve our difference in the evening before we sleep.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband works as a barber. When Covid-19 came to our country last year 2020, his business stopped. The family was relying on my small business of repairing clothes for food. We had to go without food something that affected my children health. She became mulnutrition. That is the biggest hardship I faced in life.
