How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
There is a big difference in my life now, I and my wife started small businesses which are generating income to support the family. We also got back the land that was given out as security after paying a loan. We no longer offer casual labour and this makes us feel good.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well to give me money directly and sensitise us to plan together as families and spend the money to fight poverty. There is nothing they did bad because all was done by GiveDirectly as promised.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfer for paying a debt worth UGX 800,000 and buying 2 cows.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
My life has changed because through this transfer, I was able to repossess my farm land which I had used as security for the loan. Currently, I'm clearing it and plan to plant cassava on large scale for home consumption. Previously, I farmed on small scale for only home consumption.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I got money, I felt very happy because I was going to settle the debt I had and repossess my farm land.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I cleared a debt of UGX 600,000 and repossessed my farm land, bought building materials ( iron sheets) worth UGX 300,000, gift worth UGX 100,000 and restocked my business ( spare part of the bicycle) worth UGX 150,000. There is a balance of UGX 650,000 which I'm planning to spend on building materials.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to build a small iron roofed house. My reason for building a small house is that I want to retain some money that can enable me to buy some oxen to support in the farming activity and cows that can reproduce. By so doing, I will be in position to spend my money better and carry on with it to the future. I will be able to take care of the future eventualities.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am happiest in the evening when I know I have been able to provide for my family. Their happiness is my happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship that I am faced with is poverty. I am not able to provide all that is needed for a family. An example is the fact that I do not have oxen to support in the farming activity and yet it is very key in a village setting. When the season to do farming is due, the best I can do is to move round to do casual labour so as to earn some money in order to be in position to hire oxen and an ox-plough from those who have. This is never effective because there are delays involved. At the end of it all, poor yeilds and food shortage because the weather may not favour crop growth.
