How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different from how it used to be in that I managed to buy a few household items like seats and one solar lantern. I am a happy woman who can take care of daily needs without taking loans and begging around. I started a business using the transfers which is doing well. It can take care of most of my personal needs. I can also comfortably cater for my family's needs and still pay school fees for my daughter.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give Directly has changed our lives in many ways. For instance, most of my neighbours in our village have managed to meet most of their family goals. Personally, I have peace of mind and live well because I started a business which supports me financially. I entirely depend on this business in order to settle most of my expenses. Previously, I used to odd jobs which were hectic and unreliable. I could only earn meagre wages that could not be enough to handle all my needs. I am glad that my life has taken U-turn in a positive way.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my transfer to pay school fees for my daughter who is in high school. It was my first priority because I wanted her to concentrate in school. She is a hardworking girl and I did not want her to be disrupted by being sent home due to outstanding arrears. At times she could be sent home when I did not have the money. I also bought a calve. This is an investment for me because when the number increases, I can sell some to take care of my needs and emergencies. I finally started a business in a nearby market. I sell maize , vegetables, small fish(dagaa) and tomatoes. Previously, I used to do odd jobs that were very unreliable. I now have peace of mind since I have a backup plan. I am also proud of my self because I can afford a better life compared to when I was just a casual worker.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
My daughter who should be doing his last grade in primary school next year was almost missing her end of year examinations which meant she would have to repeat yet she always have good results. I was so worried and had to try all my best to look for money to pay for her the balance she had in school. I went borrowing from our table banking group but I was not successful. I had seen failure in my life. I kept on encouraging my daughter to keep on studying even though I did not know where I would get the money. Just when I thought it was no more, I received this transfer from Give Directly. I felt God had answered my prayer and the next day, I went to school and paid the part I had promised the teachers. I am very happy my daughter was able to do her examinations and next year, she will be sitting for her final year in primary.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
When I received this transfer, I was very happy and for the first time in so many years, I felt at peace. For a while, I sat down smiling and looking at the message informing me I had received money from GD. When I was sure that it was truly mine, I knelt down to thank God for what He had done to me through Give Directly.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent my first transfer on buying sofa set which I did not have. I used to have two plastic chairs and whenever I had visitors, I would have to go and borrow from my neighbours. This undermined my relationship and respect we had between us. When I received this transfer, I first thought of seats so that I could regain my respect in the community. I also used part of the transfer to buy a solar system, which I use for lighting at night. This has reduced my daily expenditure especially the amount I use to buy kerosene daily. I feel my family will never be affected by the emissions from kerosene lamp which makes me very happy. The rest of the transfer, I used to reduce school fees for my daughter who almost missed her end of year examinations if I had not paid.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will be able to buy furniture for my house, replace my door with a metal one and the remaining amout will be spent on buying two cows.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning when I go out to do casual labour of ploughing people's farms. This makes me happy as eventually I can buy food for my family when I get paid.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I face in my life is that I depend on casual labour which at times is rare to find and it pays very little.
