"Looking after somebody else property as if it is yours has been the biggest hardship I have ever experienced. I have been looking after my neighbour's cattle for the last 14 years while at the same time milking her. The owner has been ensuring that I remain with one cattle even after multiplying by selling her calves once they mature. The milk I get is hardly enough to supplement my family and the addition costs of raising a dairy cattle like buying acaricides. I hope one day I will have one of my own."

"The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of a proper house for my family. I have been living under a leaking grass-thatched house for many years and this has posed a great challenge to my family especially during the rainy seasons."

"In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in giving us the unconditional transfers in order to uplift our living standards. We were in poverty and we were struggling with even the very basic necessities to life like good shelter. Our region is semi arid, mainly depending on farming which has failed us on several occasions. The transfers helped us to fulfil the things that seemed impossible to us, like building decent houses. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well."

"I am a motorcycle taxi driver who is employed. The income I get per day is around 3 USD since I have to give half of what I get to the motorcycle owner. With the high cost of living, this is only enough to get food for the day for my family. I will soon become a father and my biggest worry is taking care of all the family's needs with the little income that I get. I dropped out of school in my second year of secondary due to lack of school fees. I had to drop out so that my elder siblings could complete their studies. Securing meaningful employment is what has been my biggest hardship."

"My work as of now is charcoal burning, a job that is time-consuming and its income is very low. Considering the earnings from this job, I am unable to sustain the basic needs like food, better beddings and even paying school fees for my children something that has affected their performance. Therefore, the lack of a stable source of income becomes the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life."

"I am grateful to GiveDirectly because I am now sheltering in a decent and spacious iron roofed house. My previous house was very small and in a bad state. I could not renovate it on time due to lack of financial resources. I moved in to my new house and this gives me peace having a nice house to live. Apart from this, I also managed to pay for a motorcycle that I had acquired on loan. It would have taken me months to reduce this loan to a manageable amount. I am glad that I can comfortably clear the remaining amount soon through the daily proceeds from taxi services that I provide. Lastly, I am also owning goats which are my precious assets. They will reproduce and increase in number. I can rely on them as a source of money because I can readily sell the offsprings in case of a financial need."

"Prolonged period of drought has been the biggest hardship we have faced in life. We normally experience inadequate rainfall in our region making our everyday life unbearable. Owing to this, we opted for drought resistance cows (indigenous) which are less productive. Even though we have 2 acres of land under cultivation, we harvest approximately 1.5 bags of maize which is hardly enough to cater for the entire family of eight."
